"How are you and Mason?" Chris sighed, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he placed his hands in his pockets. Y/N turned to look at him, her eyes narrowing playfully before she shrugged nonchalantly, her mouth still delightfully full of yogurt.

"Fine," she managed to reply, her voice muffled by the mouthful. She didn't feel the need to elaborate, at least not at that very moment. As they walked, her casual demeanor seemed perfectly intact, but Chris could see beyond her façade.

"Why do you look unsure then?" Chris asked gently, his gaze warm yet penetrating. He paused, causing Y/N to furrow her brows in response. There was something about the way he looked at her that made her defenses waver, even as she continued to chew thoughtfully.

Y/N's shoulders dipped in a subtle shrug, a gesture that contradicted the slight crease in her brow. She swallowed the last remnants of frozen yogurt, her tongue darting out to capture a stray drip that had escaped down the side of the cup.

"I dunno," she finally admitted with a sigh, her gaze drifting to the ground for a moment before returning to meet Chris's concerned eyes. "Just... things have been a bit off lately... with me."

Chris nodded, his understanding expression inviting her to share more if she wanted to. They continued their stroll, the sounds of the city surrounding them—distant car horns, snippets of conversation, the gentle rustling of leaves in the nearby trees.

Y/N's fingers absently traced the rim of her empty yogurt cup, her unease palpable in the way she held herself. "Mason asked about Alex," she finally said, her voice tinged with a mix of sadness and discomfort.

The mention of Alex's name seemed to freeze the air around them, and Chris instinctively halted his steps, concern etched across his face as he noticed the shift in Y/N's demeanor. Her expression had grown sullen, and her gaze was distant as if caught in a whirlwind of memories.

Chris's brow furrowed as he observed her. He knew all too well the pain that Alex had caused her during their tumultuous relationship. "You haven't told him yet?"

Y/N's response was a mixture of vulnerability and frustration. "I can't, Chris," she admitted, her voice quivering slightly. She blinked rapidly, trying to keep the tears at bay.
