His sharp eyes narrowed as the black vehicle detonated, shattering upon impact as it kissed the bumpy road. The headlights crumbled first, glass scattering around as the car's frame crashed, crunching and folding into itself as the flames seized it. There was little chance that the human driver had survived such a horrid accident.
The man looked on, catching sight of the tall vampire clutching a bushy-haired girl standing on the edge of the road. Her trembling fingers were pressed against her lips and her eyebrows drawn together as she stared at the roasting car she'd been in mere seconds ago. The man had hurried forward towards the destruction, attempting to pull the door open, tearing it from its hinges. The man was successful in his mission to pull the burly driver from his seat.
A cold chuckle sounded from the figure's thin lips as he watched the horrific events unfold. His gloved hand pulled a silver pocket watch from the depths of his long, royal coat. The glass of the small thing was shattered, the hands twitching slightly but staying in their place nonetheless. Dragging a hand through his long hair, the man turned his back on the events taking place. His work, for now, was done.
"It's too late," Reiji shook his head, searching for a pulse on the middle-aged man's neck. Tears rolled down Athena's cheeks as she kneeled beside the kind man, caressing his cheek.
"He had a family," she croaked.
"I know."
The sirens sounded a few moments after, alerting the couple who looked at one another.
"Did you call the authorities?" She whispered.
"I did not."
"Someone else must have been here…"
"I can't smell anyone else," Reiji frowned, "there's no cameras, we're passersby and our phones have no signal." She nodded as the police car came to a stop before them.
-_-_-_-_-
The police station was blinding and white as the couple sat side-by-side on the uncomfortable couches, opposite the sergeant. "Apologies for the long wait," he said gruffly, shifting in his seat as he opened a large notepad. "Been a long night."
"We'd like to go home as soon as possible," Reiji informed the officer.
"Is he okay?" Athena's voice was small as she looked up from her shivering hands, "The man."
"Unfortunately he was far gone," the man said, "they were unable to save him." Athena only nodded slowly, teary eyes moving to stare at her hands once more as she gulped. "Please walk me through the events of what happened."
"We were walking home from school," Reiji lied, taking Athena's hand in his, "we go to night school. We were in the wooded area when we heard a loud crash. We ran in the direction of the noise and found the car up in flames. I did my best to help the man out of the vehicle, it appears we weren't in time."
"Were you the person who contacted the police?"
"No," Athena said, voice raw with emotion, "I couldn't get any signal. We have no idea who called for services, we saw no one else there." The officer only nodded as he scribbled down the notes.
"May I have your names?"
"Reiji Sakamaki and Athena Tsukinami," Reiji informed, clenching his jaw as he rubbed this thumb along Athena's hand.
"Sakamaki? Your father was Tougo, right?"
"Yes."
"My condolences," the man said before frowning at Reiji's state, "have you seen a medical expert?"
