"I've been thinking," Athena said, sitting in the bed, hugging her beloved plushie with a scowl in her face, "you're a pureblood vampire, why didn't your burns heal almost instantly?"

"Whatever happened to 'good morning light of my life'?" Reiji mumbled in response, his eyes peeling open to look at his messy-haired girlfriend.

"Good morning light of my life," she said, turning her body so that she was sat, cross-legged and facing him, "think about it Reiji, you should have healed automatically."

"Perhaps the moon has made me weak."

"The lunar eclipse is due to happen in October."

"How long have you been awake?"

"I woke up an hour ago," she said, "I decided to check your burns - and they still appear to be quite awful. Don't move, by the way, in case you start to hurt."

"Athena-"

"I thought it was just my shock but I definitely felt someone nearby. And! That anonymous phone call, who called the police? There was a third party, we just don't know who-"

"Darling."

"What if someone is trying to kill us? I mean, we are royalty, maybe there's a hunter on our trail?"

"Sweetheart-"

"Maybe your father had a mystery child no one knew about and they wanted the throne?"

"Don't be absurd."

"What if the lycanthropes-"

Reiji had moved swiftly, placing one hand on her thigh, the other caressing the side of her neck as his soft lips met hers, silencing her worries. "Athena," he said gently, pressing his forehead against hers, "let's have breakfast first, alright?"

"Are your burns-"

"They're fine, like I said they'd be. Okay?"

"Okay…"

The couple chose to have their breakfast in the garden, sitting opposite one another at the glass garden table with their tea and chocolate waffles. They hadn't changed from their pyjamas and both appeared to be rather sleepy as they chatted quietly.

"Darling, I understand your concerns, and I agree that they are logical and plausible, but you mustn't jump to conclusions and deem it as that. They may well have all been coincidences."

"Reiji," she said, squinting as the setting sun shone in her eyes. Reiji's lips parted at his wife's appearance in the glowing sun. "Those flames could have killed you. They're going to scar you. That wouldn't happen with normal flames."

"I know."

"Then why are you pushing my worries aside?"

"I've just killed my father," said Reiji, "my wife died that very same day, protecting me. I've spent weeks keeping treaties and changing the brainwashing my father created. I don't want to worry about other things right now. Not when I have a kingdom to run."

"Then allow me," she said, "I'll investigate."

"Absolutely not."

"I'll ask Yui to help me."

"No, Athena."

"We'd be such cool detectives though."

"You've been watching too much television."
