Chapter 41
"How's she?" Gael's voice is firm, but it doesn't intimidate Hannah anymore. "She's fine," Hannah lies. If he was there for Genesis through all this, he had the right to know how she was doing. But since he pushed her aside, he does not deserve to know anything about her.
"Don't fucking lie to me, Hannah," Gael hisses, but Hannah doesn't give in. "You left her, Gael, you don't deserve to know how she's doing," the girl responds. "I left her because I love her, not because I don't want her in my life anymore," Gael defends himself.
"Oh yeah because that makes sense," Hannah spits. "If she's not with me, she won't be a target for Wayne's guys since they have it out for me," Gael answers. Genesis is in pain because of Gael, he can't come with the 'but I love her' excuse now that she's hurting because of him.
Gael claims what he's doing is the right decision, but for some reason, he cannot see that what he's doing is hurting Genesis. The woman he claims he loves. Hannah will never understand why he's doing what he's doing, she gets that his intentions are right, but he can still back off. He can still do something about this and he can still fix this.
Fix her.
"I'm going to hang up now," Hannah explains, "You might do it for her safety, but then stop involving yourself in her life. You made this decision a while ago, stop trying to make this harder than it is." Gael's breath hitches, it's as if he now just realizes the weight of his actions. He's not pretending, he's really divorcing her.
"The lawyer is on his way to you with papers, and then you'll just have to sign them to finalize the divorce," Hannah says, "The ink spots aren't mistakes, they're because Genesis was crying when she signed them. Now fuck off and stop calling me or her phone."
Gael hangs up the phone and he slips it back into his back pocket. If he can't reach them directly, he'll just harass James and the other guys with it. It's not like they have anything better to do than to talk to him about his wife.
They're not divorced until he decides that they are. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knows Hannah's right, he should've told Genesis first and he shouldn't have left her, but he also didn't want to give her that out where he could easily get back with her and risk her life again. At least this way she hates him and this way she won't come crawling back begging for him to come back.
Maybe now she'll be safe. Without him.
Today was going to be a nightmare, Genesis knew that the police were waiting for her to answer some questions and she knew that that meant she'd have to relive it. She realized that the more she talked about things, the more she started to remember things, which already felt like a stab in the heart because it made her fall in love with Gael all over again – but maybe it made her also remember something from the accident.
"Nat?" Genesis looks up at her friend. While Hannah was on the phone with whoever was calling her, Natalia stayed with her. "Yes?" She asks, looking up from her phone. "I don't want to speak to the cops, what if I remember something and it'll hurt me," Genesis whispers.
Natalia reaches over and she takes her hand. Hannah walks into the room just as Natalia was about to answer. She whispers something that Genesis doesn't understand before sitting back down on the other side of the room.
"If you want us to be there, we can stay, we were there," Natalia says and she glances at Hannah to catch her up to speed. "Don't be scared, love," Hannah says, "Remember the story we told you?" Genesis nods and she looks at the two girls.
"Get them in here so we can get it over with," she says and she covers her face with her hands. Natalia gets up and she walks to the door, she pushes it further open and allows the police offers to walk inside. "Mrs. Mayfield," the chief says, walking to the bed. He immediately looks at the two girls at her bedside and he narrows his eyes.
