"Mama, let me." Palmer whines as we make cookies together.
"Just not too much."
"I know." She is very careful as she pours the measured flour into the bowl. "See."
"Perfect." I kiss her cheek.
"More chocolate." She declares. My doorbell rings, and I ignore it, but it keeps going off.
"Um...why don't you mix the batter while I go check who is at the door." I instruct my daughter.
"Mix, mix, mix." Palmer sings as I clean my hands. I check my security feed, surprised to see Serena, of all people standing outside my door.
"E? Are you home?" She calls out, but I don't answer. "Please...I...I need my best friend. I...I finally found my dad. And he was with my mom and...now somethings wrong with her." At that moment, all anger I have towards Serena washes away. "Please...I need someone to talk to. Please." She begs. I buzz her in.
"Palmer." I call out.
"I'm still mixing, mama."
"Um, Aunt Serena is stopping by."
"Ohhh." She runs out of the kitchen with cookie batter on her hands. "Really?" A knock is heard on the front door.
"Let's greet her. But no touching." I remind her.
"Okay." I open the door to a puffy red-eyed Serena.
"Hi, Palmer." Her voice cracks, and I know she's been crying for a long time.
"Mama said I can't touch."
"We're baking cookies." I tell Serena.
"Really?" I nod my head.
"Do you want to help us?" I ask, and she nods and joins us in the kitchen. Palmer continues to mix the batter.
"You're really good at this, Palmer." Serena interacts with my daughter.
