Prompt:
It was just another ordinary day at Wawanakwa High, bustling with students rushing to their classes and the chatter of voices filling the hallways. As the lunch period approached, you found yourself with an empty seat at your usual table, surrounded by the usual crowd of friends. However, today was different. Cody sat alone at a nearby table, looking slightly dejected. Curiosity got the better of you, and you decided to join him.
Taking a deep breath, you approached Cody's table and asked, "Mind if I join you? Looks like your friends are out today."
Cody looked up, his eyes widening in surprise. "Oh, uh, sure! I mean, yeah, go ahead," he stammered, quickly rearranging his books to make room for you. "Thanks for asking."
You settled into the seat beside him, a warm smile on your face. "No problem. So, what happened to your friends? Owen, Noah, and Izzy, right?"
Cody sighed, his shoulders slumping. "Yeah, they all got sick. Owen first, and then it spread to Noah and Izzy. I guess I'm the lucky one who didn't catch it."
"Aw, that must be tough for you," you sympathized, hoping to make Cody feel better. "But hey, at least you're not alone anymore. I'm here to keep you company."
A soft blush crept onto Cody's cheeks as he looked at you, a mixture of surprise and gratitude in his eyes. "Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm not used to being alone, you know? I mean, I'm not exactly the most popular guy in school."
You leaned in closer, lowering your voice. "Well, popularity isn't everything. Besides, being popular doesn't necessarily mean being happy. I think you're pretty cool just the way you are, Cody."
Cody blinked, clearly taken aback by your words. "Wow, I... I never really thought about it that way before. Thanks for saying that. It means a lot."
The two of you continued chatting, engaging in a lively conversation that spanned a wide range of topics. You discovered Cody's passion for technology, his love for trivia, and his dream of becoming a game developer someday. As he spoke, his confidence grew, his insecurities fading into the background.
Before you knew it, the lunch period came to an end.
"I had a great time talking to you. Thanks for keeping me company, Y/N," Cody said, a genuine smile appearing on his face.
The use of your name caught you off guard, but you couldn't help but feel a warm sense of camaraderie with Cody. "Anytime, Cody. I had a great time too. Don't hesitate to reach out if you ever want to hang out again."
As you both stood up, ready to head to your next classes, Cody hesitated for a moment before mustering up the courage to ask, "Would you want to... maybe grab lunch together tomorrow? You know, just the two of us?"
A wide smile spread across your face, and you nodded enthusiastically. "I'd love to, Cody. It's a date!"
Cody's face lit up with a mixture of excitement and relief. "Great! I'll see you tomorrow then."
