Prompt:
You had been friends with Bridgette and Courtney for as long as you could remember. You had all met in kindergarten and had been inseparable ever since. However, as high school hit, things began to change. Bridgette and Geoff, the party boy, had hit it off during the summer after middle school, and they'd been inseparable ever since. And after freshman year, Courtney had finally caved in and begun a relationship with Duncan, the infamous punk of the school who had had a crush on the brunette since elementary.
You were now a junior in high school, and you couldn't help but feel left out. You weren't looking for a relationship, but you were upset with the fact that your two friends spent less and less time with you. It seemed like the two girls were always going on double dates without you. When they did invite you to hang out, though, you were always third-wheeling. This made you irked because you just wanted to spend time with the two girls again like you used to.
You tried not to think about the two girls as you lay on your bed on a Friday evening, listening to some music to drown out your thoughts. However, you were interrupted when Bridgette had called you up.
"Hey," she said, her voice full of excitement through the other line. "Geoff's having a party tonight. You should come."
You sighed, knowing that it would be another night of feeling like the odd one out. "I don't know, Bridge," you responded, looking out your window. "I don't really feel like partying tonight."
"Oh, come on," Bridgette urged, her voice becoming more insistent. "It'll be fun. You can hang out with me and Geoff."
You hesitated, not sure if you wanted to spend another evening watching your friends flirt and cuddle while you sat alone in the corner. But, in the end, you relented.
"Okay," you caved in. "I'll come."
When you arrived at Geoff's house, you could already hear the music pumping. You made your way through the crowds of people, trying to find a familiar face. Eventually, you spotted Bridgette and Geoff in the corner, kissing passionately. You rolled your eyes, feeling a twinge of jealousy.
As you made your way to the kitchen to grab a drink, you heard someone call your name. You turned to see Courtney standing next to one of her cheerleading friends, Lindsay. Duncan was also in the kitchen, rummaging through the refrigerator.
"Hey, Y/N," Courtney greeted, smiling at you. "We didn't know you were coming tonight."
"Yeah, Bridgette talked me into it," you told her, rubbing your arm.
Suddenly, Tyler, Lindsay's boyfriend, bursted through the back door with Owen.
"Court, you wanna play beer pong!?" Tyler called out, knowing that the preppy girl was an extreme light weight.
"We need one more player!" Owen added on, holding back a chuckle.
"I don't know guys. I wasn't thinking about getting drunk tonight," Courtney admitted to the two boys.
"It'll be fun, Courtney!" Lindsay joined in on the conversation, tugging her arm.
"Yeah!" Owen laughed as Courtney held the solo cup to her lips. "And besides, you can get your revenge on the reigning champion."
"Gwen's playing?" Courtney lifted up her brow, almost spitting out her drink. She tossed the solo cup to the side, a devilish smirk forming on her face. "Oh, I'm in!"
The boys hooted while Lindsay dragged Courtney over to the back door.
"It was nice talking to you, Y/N! Glad you decided to come!" Courtney waved before the screen door shut.
You sighed, leaning against the counter top. Duncan noticed your despondent state and walked over to you.
"What's got your panties in a twist?" Duncan asked, holding onto a beer can.
"Nothing," you muttered, waving him off.
Duncan leaned in, his breath hot fanning your cheek. "You know, you look really beautiful tonight."
You felt your cheeks flush, feeling a surge of excitement at his words.
As the night wore on, you found yourself gravitating towards Duncan more and more. You laughed at his jokes, leaned in close to him as he spoke, and even let him put his arm around you as you watched the partygoers dance.
It wasn't until the end of the night, when everyone was starting to leave, that you realized what had happened. You had spent the entire evening with Duncan, barely speaking to Bridgette and Courtney at all. It didn't even cross your mind that Courtney and Duncan were together and you were hanging out with him alone. And you had loved every minute of it.
Questions to keep in mind as you envision yourself interacting with other characters:
How did you, Bridgette, and Courtney meet in kindergarten? Did you approve of Geoff and Duncan? Did you ever communicate with the two girls about what you felt? Did you ever talk to their partners about how you were feeling? Do you feel like Courtney and Bridgette are replacing you? Have you ever invited the two to hang out without their partners around? Did you ever try to get into a relationship to "fit in"? If so, who did you have a thing with? How long did it last for? What did you wear to the party? Did you have alcohol at all? Did Courtney notice you hanging out with Duncan or was she too busy playing beer pong to notice? Did anyone see Duncan's arm wrapped around you? Do you feel any remorse?
