Kai's breathing was rapid, his chest heaving up and down as he pivoted around. A light snow fell, covering every visible surface and trees stretched out on every side of him.
Where was he?
"I'm gonna kill you!" He boomed again, voice cutting through the treeline.
Without another thought, Kai pulled Johanna behind the nearest tree. He glanced down at her, locking onto her light eyes. Despite everything, he knew he had to protect her. Her ankle was still hurt, which meant fighting Dax would be near impossible. He was far bigger than her, even taller than Kai.
He gripped his spear tighter in his hands, knuckles turning white. He could do this. Peia was right. He could do this.
"Hi there."
Before Kai even had time to react, Dax appeared around the tree they'd used to hide. He had a knife in his hand, blade pointed at Johanna as he lunged forward. Kai didn't hesitate to step in front of her, his movements faster than the older boy's.
As he shoved Dax to the ground, something sharp pierced the right side of his chest. Pain radiated from the area, but he ignored it, only one worry racing through his mind. He threw a punch into Dax's face over and over again before desperately grabbing the nearest stone.
In one swift motion, he slammed it down into Dax's skull. By the time he was finished, scarlett grazed the snow around it, the echo of a cannon subsequently following.
But he was dead. He was already dead.
He could hear Johanna say his name as he stumbled to his feet. His gaze shifted down to the knife sticking out of his lung, the ability to breathe becoming much more difficult. And all he felt was pain. That was the only thing coursing through him as he stumbled forward, falling haphazardly into her arms.
But he was dead. He'd died.
As he opened his eyes, pain sliced through his forearm, a scream tearing from his lips. He knew Snow was watching, using his pain and trauma to create the most gruesome memories. He'd already warped his mind, breaking him down into nothing more than one of his little lab rats.
"Nice try." A Peacemaker mused, eyes glittering with devoted hysteria.
Hot, searing pain ripped through his eye and suddenly he was sitting up in his bed, a cold sweat coating the back of his neck. His eyes rapidly flicked around the room, zeroing in on his dad. He knew he'd gasped, his breathing extremely heavy, but Sawyer was still sleeping. He watched as his dad turned onto his other side, exhaustion clearly keeping a hold of him.
Kai could feel his heart wildly beating inside his chest, the thought of sleep entirely unappealing to him. He swung his legs off the side of his bed, stepping over his fallen pillow and slipping his shoes on. He couldn't be here. He couldn't do it anymore.
