Kai's leg bobbed up and down, lightly tapping on the slate gray floors. He'd been sitting on his bed ever since the wedding had gotten over. Finnick and Peia were doing honeymoon activities, so he had no one to talk to about how he was feeling— not that he would have willingly done that.
The one person that flashed through his mind was his brother. He would've talked to him. If Rhett was there, he wouldn't have said half the things he had. But he wasn't there. His big brother was gone and he was all alone.
"Okay. What's going on?" Sawyer finally asked, glancing over at his son.
"Nothing. I just said something I shouldn't have." Kai confessed, squeezing his eyes shut. "And now I don't know what to do." He said, lying down on his bed with his hands over his face.
"Okay..." Sawyer responded, eyes narrowing. "Well, what did you say?"
Kai only groaned.
"Come on. Tell me what's going through your head, bud."
"Am I an asshole?"
Sawyer's lips parted, his mouth dropping open a bit. He hadn't been expecting that. At all. He swallowed hard from where he sat on his bed, letting out a breath. "No." He answered, pausing momentarily. "But you have impeccable timing and tend to leave us all dumbfounded."
Kai sat up, locking onto his dad's same brown eyes. "So basically I'm an asshole."
"No. I didn't say that, but—"
Kai audibly sighed, shaking his head. "Shit."
Sawyer's gaze softened as he stood, making his way over to his son. "Talk to me. What happened?" He asked, taking a seat next to him.
"I made a joke."
That was all he said, but Sawyer knew exactly what he was talking about. It'd always been the way his son had coped with things. Peia had been similar, mostly bottling everything up and shutting down. Rhett, on the other hand, turned his grief into anger. He was usually the easiest to sway into talking about his feelings though. He got that from his mother.
"Well, what are you gonna do about it?" Sawyer asked.
Kai met his gaze, shaking his head. "I'll be back." He said, getting up from his spot and walking to the door. As he reached it, he turned back to his dad. "Thanks."
Without another thought, Kai left. He hesitantly made his way down the hallway, stopping as he reached Johanna's door. He paused, his fist raised in the air. Then he lightly pounded on the metal, a dull sound vibrating through her door.
He let out a breath, dropping his hands back down by his side. He began to fidget as he waited, eyes fixated on the floor. Her door came open a moment later, irritation still etched behind her gaze. She didn't say a word as she stepped back, allowing him to come in.
