WARNING! This chapter will probably be distressing to some readers...maybe a lot of readers. I can't say why without spoiling anything...just contains intense scenes. Read at your own risk. It starts the final arc of PHOENIX. <3

TW: SA mentioned (canon-typical / some argument about whether this is canon...use season 6 episode 17 as reference)

This is the first time we've gone on a legitimate date in months. Being legally and officially married to Keigo has been the biggest flex I've ever had. Over the past four years, we've maintained our ranks as the Number One and Number Ten Heroes of Japan. Shoto and his class have long since graduated, and are becoming inspirational heroes, climbing ranks faster than I ever did. Today, Keigo and I are finally treating ourselves after a hard day's work.

Kei booked us reservations at this fancy midnight diner at the top of one of the tallest skyscrapers in Musutafu. Not only that, but he had rented it out completely, just for us, which is another reason why we're still in our Pro uniforms and didn't bother to dress up. The food is fucking delicious, and Keigo and I are flirting with one another like we're teenagers again. I sip on my peppermint tea as Keigo polishes off the rest of his yakitori. The glass walls of the spire show off the glittering twilight sky behind Keigo, and I can't decide which is more breathtaking: the view or my husband.

"You wanna watch a movie when we get home?" Keigo asks as he wipes his mouth with his napkin before readjusting his wings in the seat.

"You wanna watch Barbenheimer?" I tease, bringing up Keigo's fairly recent obsession.

"Ooooh, a double feature! You sure you won't fall asleep?" Kei smirks, and I shake my head.

BZZT! BZZT!

My phone vibrates continuously in my pocket; I'd had it on silent. I pull it out and look at the screen.

"Huh. It's Fuyumi?" I mutter, confused; my sister never calls me this late. Keigo motions for me to answer it. As soon as I put the phone to my ear, I feel instant terror. Fuyumi is screaming and crying; I can barely understand her.

"TOYA! TOYA, OH MY GOD!" She shrieks, absolutely hysterical. I feel like I'm going to faint. I don't think I've ever heard Fuyumi's voice sound so desperate and grating.

"Fuyumi?! Fuyumi, what's wrong?!" I blurt frantically, and Keigo's eyes widen.

"TOYA! T-THERE WAS-THERE WAS A CAR ACCIDENT A-AND, OH GOD!" Her voice breaks as she sobs, and I stand up, knocking my chair over as I put both hands on the phone. My heart feels like it's going to explode.

'Is it Shoto? Is it Natsuo? Who else is out this late?!'

"Where are you?!" I stammer as I start to hyperventilate.

"MUSUTAFU CENTRAL HOSPITAL! TOYA, IT'S MOM!" She screams, and my blood runs cold. I feel numb. I feel utterly numb and horrified and desperate all at the same time. My throat closes, and my cortisol spikes.

"Fuyumi! It's gonna be alright. I'm on my way, okay?! Keigo and I are on the way!" I stammer before tearing the phone briefly from my ear and looking my husband dead in the face. "Kei, we're fucking leaving. It's Mom. Something's wrong. Something fucking terrible happened. Leave a check. We gotta go."

...

I'm so fucking confused. My brain is scrambling into a mess of what-ifs. Keigo and I burst through the lobby doors of the hospital, and Fuyumi is on her knees by the receptionist's desk, absolutely sobbing while Natsuo and Shoto attempt to comfort her. They're both crying, too.
