I am always the risk-taker, I don't do second guesses or doubt my decisions or back down, but when over 50 people's life is on the line? Especially my family? Oh, my mind was a mess.
But I had to put my doubt aside and save my family in any way possible, and my plan was going to work.
I stepped in front of the door and opened it after a long deep breath, pointing the gun out for any walkers. After I checked everything was clear, I motioned everyone to move and they did. Luckily, we didn't have any baby crying or anyone dropping things, we were as quiet as we could. But as we were only five people away from everyone is in the cars, someone closed the door harshly and it fucking echoed through the whole street because it was dead silent.
Now me and my close cousins Hammod and Abdood were running getting all the bags inside of my mom's trunk because it was her car I'm driving, an Toyota Land Cruiser, same as most of the cars we're taking. Until we saw three walkers going toward Saloom's car, I screamed at my cousins to get into the car and pulled up the gun, and started to shoot at them, one after one.
As I nailed the last one, some people that came out of nowhere yelled at me, "behind you!". And when I turned I heard a rifle from them shoot five walkers that were after me. "Thank you" as I turned to them and noticed the U.S. military uniform, "wanna thank us? How bout' you giving us a car?" one said, "yeah like that's gonna happen" I chuckled and turned to my car, but when I heard a gun load I stopped and turned. "You don't wanna do this, I'm trying to save my family here and I'll do it... even if it cost me my life" I looked down at my hand, which holds a grenade, and looked right back at them, "If I pull this? y'all and I won't survive but they will and I only care about that, and if you walk away? Nobody gets hurt and you go steal some other car" I declare holding the grenade tightly while hiding my shaky hand. "How about this... you're the only one with a gun, which indicate few gunfires or few ballsy men, we need a safe ride and hideout. We have the gunfire and men and you seem to be taking your family to a safe place, how about we make a deal?" another stated, "it's hard to trust you guys, I mean I said thank you and you pulled a gun at me and threatened my family's safety!" I countered, "peace pact? We could help each other trust me, plus, we didn't know about the family and kids, we would never do that" he seemed genuine, but I couldn't risk it with my family. But we actually need these men!
I turned to the drivers, "If something happens, just get to the farm as fast as you could, trust your gut feeling okay?" they all nodded, and I turned to the military men, "you're coming with me until you gain my trust" I affirmed, they nodded and got in all three of them.
So in my car were; my sister Reem, my cousin from mom's side Wadha, my cousin from dad's side Sarah, and her brothers Fawaz and Mohammad, also my cousin from mom's side Hamood and Abood, and now the three military men.
In the walkie-talkies that I gave every car, we counted to three and start up the cars. We did that successfully and we all drove off, heading to the highway. "Drive slowly, no need to rush and keep your eyes open okay?" I reminded in the walkie talkies.
Two minutes into the wafra's highway went smooth, until of course we saw a pile cars all into each other, closing any lane or path to drive. And they were filled with dead people, children even, familes that were trying to get outta here. We stopped our cars five kilometers away next to each other and stayed silent trying to figure out how the hell are going past them without risking any damage to any car.
I leaned my head to the steering wheel trying to find a way. "Kami?" uncle Abdullah in the walkie's wanting to know what to do, "think, think, think" I whispered to myself, "can we go back?" my cousin Mohammad asked worriedly, I turned to look at him in disbelief. "No we can't! You have your whole family with you, some are not and our house isn't gonna hold up." I said frustrated, "wait Kami! Your car? It can be a distraction right?" My sister spoke reminding me, "yes and a stronger structure!" I smiled happily, "will it hold off with bumping into a couple zombies and cars?" One of the soldiers asked, "fuck, it can hold off a fucking bull" I smirked, "now what? We go back and get it?" Fawaz asked, "no" I said as I got off the car, "where are you going?" my dad whispered scream to me as I opened the trunk and took an M4 and loaded it, "Reem will tell you" I whispered back, and went to the back seats of our car, "soldier move your leg" I spoke and so he did.
