Once More

Can I awaken once more,
To the brash army of raindrops
Invading the quiet of the night
In the most exquisite of
Wake-up calls.

Can I hold on once more,
To the tender, child-like faith,
That the world is infinitely kind,
And people that you trust -
Will keep you safe.

Can I hear just once more,
The steady pitter-patter
Of soft furry paws,
The joyous dance on wooden floors,
That was once my routine.

Can I feel once more,
The trusting embrace of my dear Mother ,
Hear the reassuring heartbeat,
Of her Kind Heart--
Too big for my arms now.

Can I give in once more,
To the unsullied innocence of first love,
When every whispered promise
Was to be kept
Till Kingdom come.

Can I dance once more,
With reckless abandon,
Oblivious to stares,
The whirlwind of arms and legs,
My own Waltz of freedom.

Just this once,
Just once more.
