"She has been complaining about her stomach feeling weird and aching since morning," Soomin said on the phone as I entered her place.
She was stuck with work and Minseo was not feeling well, so she called me and asked me to come take care of her.
"You do your work, Min, I will take care of her, don't worry, okay?" I softly said, trying to calm her down, just her voice was enough to understand how worried she was.
"Yeah..." she sighed.
I hung up the call and walked up the stairs towards Minseo's room.
She was on her bed, watching something on her iPad.
"Appa," she softly called out when I entered, "how are you feeling, dear?" I asked, she had the AC on the lowest temperature and snuggled into her thickest blanket, the room was very cold.
"I don't know, Appa," she whined, "a few minutes I feel good but the next few minutes my stomach feels weird."
"Did you eat something new in the last few days?" I asked, "I don't like outside food, so I haven't really eaten anything out of the ordinary," she answered.
"I will make this tea for you, my mother used to make that for me," I said, ruffling her hair, "as long as it doesn't taste bad, I don't mind drinking it," she mumbled making me chuckle, "you don't have to worry about that," I said and got up.
I walked down to the kitchen and started preparing the tea after having a call with my mother to make sure I had the right recipe.
When I walked back upstairs to her room, she wasn't on the bed but crouching down at the entrance of the bathroom, crying.
I immediately placed the glass on the table and rushed to her, "hey... is it hurting a lot? Should we meet a doctor?" I asked, kneeling next to her and grabbing her shoulders.
"I- I am- bleeding," she sobbed, "bleeding? You are hurt?" I panicked, looking over to see where she was hurt, but I couldn't find any wounds on her, "I don't know, I went to the washroom and I saw- saw blood," she continued sobbing and that is when it hit me.
"Oh..." I needed a moment to find proper words to explain to her so that she wouldn't panic more, "Minnie, look at me," I softly said and she slowly looked up, her red eyes looking at me with so much fear.
"It's completely normal to bleed from there, ok? When girls grow up, this starts, it's also a part of growing up, in fact, this confirms that you are a healthy little girl," of course I can't tell her what exactly this means, she is barely 10 to understand about how babies are connected with periods.
"This is known as the menstrual cycle and this happens 3-5 days every month, there is nothing to worry about," I added, softly caressing her cheek with my thumb.
"R-really?" she asked to which I nodded.
"Now, let's change into new clothes and underwear, and we will learn how to use a sanitary pad, ok? It's something that you use to avoid staining your clothes," I gently made her stand up.
"I know what it looks like, but I don't know how exactly it's put on, so we will call Nabi imo and ask her since your mother is at work and I don't want to disturb her now, is that alright?" I asked to which she agreed silently.
While she went to the closet to get a new pair of clothes, I called Nabi and explained to her the situation before I searched for the pads in the bathroom cabinets and handed one to Minseo.
While Minseo was in the bathroom, I recalled everything that my sister needed when she had her periods and got it ready for Minseo.
I had the heat pads ready by the time she came out, "this would make you feel comfortable, I will go down and make this really awful-smelling drink for you, I am sorry but trust me it will make you feel a lot better."
