"Are you sure it's okay for us to be here?!" Bright asked for the nth time.
He and Gabriel had entered the forest when the sun was about to set. Gabriel knew that the Maylocks and Tills will be done hunting by now and are already on their way home. So none of them would see the two going in the forest to hunt.
And besides, Gabriel has done this a dozen times and he was never caught. After he learned that Bright only hunts in the forest to feed himself, he figured to show him a good place where he can hunt for good preys.
To him, Bright is a mysterious but a genuine vampire. He may look stoic all the time but his attitude says otherwise. He and Bright had also gotten a lot closer since they both started practicing for their upcoming performance with the music club. And since they don't sleep, they would practice and read the notes all night.
"Come on. You always hunt on the other side of the forest. This won't be any different." Gabriel assures him while still leading the way.
"But isn't this the werewolves' territory? I thought you hate them. If they caught us, they'll kill us." Bright said to him but in a rather blunt tone.
"They don't even know we're here. Those dogs are on their way back to their camp and sitting around bonfires while singing stupid songs!" Gabriel mocked as he let out a short laugh at his own statement.
"That's just how they are. Don't vampires have their own thing too?" Bright mumbled only to earn a disagreeing scoff from the other. For obvious reasons.
Gabriel thinks that Bright might be a recent nomad. Someone who got bitten on the latest time. Which gets him to a conclusion as to why he thinks kindly of everything. He thinks Bright never knew the history they had with wolves.
"Whatever. All I know is that they're stupid! And they all stink!" He said laughing louder at the last part.
Bright didn't bother to say more. When clearly, Gabriel has obvious hate to the werewolves.
"Hey look." Gabriel suddenly whispered as he crouched to hide behind a nearby bush.
Bright also hid beside him and saw a reindeer peering around. As if it's aware that someone is close.
The vampires exchanged looks at each other. Their eyes glowed red indicating that their instincts as vampires are both active.
The two were about to bolt to their prey when they heard a terrifying scream of a woman. This scared the reindeer and made it run away to the opposite direction. While the two vampires turned to their east where the scream came from.
The two didn't need to say it in words. They both ran and went to the direction where the scream came from. Running as fast as they could. Bright had to be careful and watch his speed so Gabriel won't suspect.
They had to stop when they smelled a werewolf getting closer.
"I thought you said they're coming home." Bright whisper yelled before he literally dragged Gabriel to hide and climbed on a tree.
They watched from above as the wolf padded closer to the woman's body. She is lucky to still be alive but she seems to be worn out and must've been thrown harshly down to that spot.
The wolf suddenly howled. Probably calling its alpha and letting his pack know of his location. But it hasn't even been a few seconds when the alpha was suddenly strangled by a hooded figure.
Gabriel almost cussed but Bright quickly covered his mouth. His eyes though, carefully observed the hooded figure that was trying to injure the werewolf.
Bright felt his goosebumps again after he recognized the faint markings on the red hood. It was his mom, also the school dean. She's wearing the red hood she always wore whenever their family goes out hunting in their forest.
She must've been very thirsty for blood and captured a human to feed herself.
The wolf whimpered after its bone was cracked. He turned to his human form right away, groaning and enduring the pain that was made by his opponent.
The vampire would have feed from him too, but because he is a werewolf his blood will be one of the things that the vampire will first avoid.
Bright and Gabriel saw as the hooded vampire broke the woman's neck before drinking her blood. It was is if she's draining her like a mere bag. Until there is no more blood left on her.
Bright felt his blood boil. He never thought his mother would be like this. His mom swore to protect their people. But all those years of being away. What had it done to her?
Did despair finally drowned her into her evil nature?
Has she forgotten the teachings of their family?
"She's getting away." Bright growled when the hooded vampire started running away as if she didn't just murdered someone.
Bright was about to go after her when Gabriel suddenly grabbed him by his shoulder.
"We need to go back. The pack is coming here and Shadow is with them. She'll know we're here once she get a whiff of our scent!" He said before they both jumped down the tree.
Bright turned back to the injured wolf. A few seconds more and he will die.
He knew his mother and her past. She will never hurt someone and just leave them with an injury that heals. And not a single one of her victims ever survived.
"I hope they find him soon. That wolf looked young." Gabriel mumbled as he was also looking at the dying wolf on the ground.
Bright turned to him and figured of an idea. Maybe a trick.
"What do you want to happen now? Shadow will still know we're here. Our scent will leave traces and we can't help that."
"The kid will make her busy. I hope she won't think too much of our trace so she can just focus with her own kind." Gabriel sighed and beckoned Bright to go.
He walked away first, turning his back to the vampire.
And he never saw the way Bright's eyes turned suddenly white. It lasted just a brief second and the moment he heard the wolf suddenly gasped for air as if he just came back to life...
"Say goodbye to your family. That's how much time I can only grant you." He whispered before following Gabriel.
The two got back to their dorm with gloomy faces. Not because they came back without a hunt. But because of the anxious feeling of what would happen because of the hooded vampire.
Gabriel has been around for quite a while. Whenever a human is killed by a vampire. That's when it always gets the worst for him and his kind. Humans and werewolves suddenly hate them again. He thinks it's unfair considering all the circumstances they are already in.
Nomads and Halfbloods are already treated less than what they deserve. But when things like this happen, they always get the worst treatment.
Bright on the other hand is more sad and anxious. Granting the small desire was all he could do to help his mother's victim. He felt partly responsible. Especially when he was there and watched what happened knowing that he has the power to stop her.
"We're all dam*ed again!"
