Sara and Oliver were walking on a winter day, hands casually brushing against each other from finishing tutoring and listening to music on Oliver's phone when Sara got an idea.
"Oliver! Let's make one of those shared playlist things! Then we can listen to what we like instead of having lists on our phones of it and going to listen to it later." Oliver nodded and smiled.
"It's a great idea, Sara Lin. Let's do it."
Oliver and Sara quickly got back to their place and Sara decided she'd head by Oliver's so they could start it. Oliver opened his door, and they waved at Joe in the living room as they walked to their shared room.
"I've never done this before..."Oliver admits and Sara said she did it once with Vicky and would walk him through it. Once Oliver hit "Add User" on Spotify, Sara was added and the songs began to fly in from Guns and Roses (Oliver's addition) to Ariana Grande (Sara's).
As time went on, the list grew and grew along with feelings. Sara and Oliver in the beginning did it for music recommendations, but now, it has become something more. Sometimes, they would even use titles in songs to spell things out as messages and laugh at the silly results. This went on for almost two months.
Today was a bit different. Oliver felt a bit different when he woke up that day.
He's been wondering why Sara Lin always seemed to be on his mind. It went from simple tutoring to more. It was making cookies together, going to see a movie or two, and now a music playlist. It was talking to each other on their porches for hours on end and pointing at constellations. It was realizing that the only thing missing from their friendship was a label and it was a label he wanted. He wasn't sure if Sara wanted it though.
Sara's always talked to Oliver about her boy problems and while at first, Oliver thought it was just crazed and weird, he ended up being a bit sad. Did Sara ever have...problems with him? It sounds funny to say but he wondered if one day he could be a boy she wondered about. He wanted to be on her mind.
Sara went by Oliver's that day and Joe opened the door and greeted her. Before she went to Oliver's room like normal, Joe stopped her.
"Hey, Sara. Can you do me a favor? It's important." Joe asks and Sara nods.
"Yeah, Joe. What can I do?" Sara asked worriedly. What could Joe ask that could be such a big thing to worry about?
"If...you have or don't have any feelings towards my brother, I need you to let him know," Joe says, scratching the back of his head.
"Joe, I don't understand. What do you mean? Did he say something?" Sara asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No! No, he didn't but I've been noticing him being different these two months. He looks forward to everything you two do. You two hang out all the time. I just...I'll say this. The last time he liked someone like this, it didn't go well. I just don't want him hurt again." Joe said, voice trailing off and Sara hitched her breath.
Oliver never mentioned anything to her and if he did....what would she say?
"Okay, Joe. I'll be cautious." Sara says and Joe nods, thanking her.
She knew this was coming.
Oliver scrambled away from the door as he heard Sara Lin coming. Why did Joe say all that? What if she didn't feel the same way?
When Sara opened the door, Oliver pretended to be grabbing some paper.
"Hey Sara Lin, I was beginning to wonder where you were at. How are you?" Oliver asked nervously and Sara bit her lip.
"Oliver, can we talk?" Sara asked and Oliver sighed. He knew this was coming.
"Yeah. Of course."
They both sit on his bed, a silence taking over the room until Sara finally says something.
"You know, I'll be going to college soon, and I...It's bringing up a lot of emotions Oli" Sara said to begin. Oliver wanted to say something but Sara insisted she finished first before he could and he nodded.
"Oliver, I've enjoyed hanging out with you these past few months. I've loved getting to know you and the help with tutoring and going to your band rehearsals and it...has been amazing. Joe just talked to me and I figured this was coming so I'm going to be honest." Sara sighs and grabs Oliver's hand, gently rubbing it,
"Oliver, I do like you. I genuinely do and as more than a friend. I'd never want you to not be in my life. The reality is, I found out I got accepted into NYU's English and that's across the country." Sara said while Oliver raised his eyebrows.
"You think going to college across the country would stop me from pursuing something with you?" Oliver asked and Sara shook her head.
"No, but it will stop me from pursuing something with you. I can't do that to you, Oliver."
"Then don't. Let's try this out. I...I don't usually do this. I liked one other person before but Sara, I think I-" Oliver cut in but Sara finished.
"Oliver. You can't finish that sentence. I leave in two weeks and will be gone for four years. I..I don't want to hurt you." Sara cried, tears going down her face. Oliver held her as she cried, tears slowly coming down his as well. They decided to finish it there and Sara walked back to her place and cried in her room.
As the two weeks went on, Sara and Oliver continued to talk, the hurt parts of them still trying their best. Oliver and Joe even helped Sara pack along with Vicky and Patrick and finally the day came. They, along with Sara's dad, all went to see Sara off at the airport and everyone gave her a big hug, her and Oliver's hug being the longest.
"I don't know who will be lucky enough to have you, but they have an amazing person," Sara whispered told Oliver. Oliver whispered back "Don't give up on us yet. I'll see you soon" and Sara's heart broke again. As they let go, Sara waved bye to everyone and she boarded her plane for her NYC adventure.
As time went on, Sara and Oliver talked occasionally but it wasn't as much as it was, both needing some space from the situation. Three months later, Sara saw an alert from Spotify:
"Oliver Yang added a song to your playlist!"
Confused, Sara checked and saw the song: Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T's and smiled. It felt so fitting to their story and where she's at.
A song here and there led to texts, video chats, games, calls, and more until they were back to normal and stronger than ever. November came and Sara got a video chat from Oliver. Sara answered it to see Oliver but he wasn't in his usual setting.
"Oli, where are you?" Sara asked confused and Oliver smiled.
"I don't know, maybe you can help me. Does this look familiar?" Oliver noted and turned his camera around to show the outside of her hall and Sara gasped. Sara ran outside and into Oliver's arms, almost knocking him down on the ground.
"Oli, what are you doing here?! You are crazy!" Sara asked smiling and Oliver smiled.
"Crazy yes but crazy for you Sara Lin." Oliver joked and she hugged him again. Not having him in her life for that small bit made her realize how much she loved having him around.
"Sara, I know you are far and that's okay. I have realized that distance will not stop me from wanting to be with you."
"Oli-"
"I love you Sara Lin. I know I do. Nobody has made me feel this way. I wouldn't fly out here for anyone else. It will be you. Please be my girlfriend Sara. We can do this. I know-" Oliver was cut off as Sara kissed him.
"Yes, Oliver. I definitely will." She smiled and hugged him. No matter how far they are, they always can find themselves back to each other.
A/N: This one feels dramatic but I think it's cute! Don't forget to star the story and comment if you're enjoying! :)
