It all started as a joke.

Their inside joke led to...the pig pencil.

You see, Sara Lin adored pigs and Oliver Yang adored Sara Lin so this just worked out perfectly.

He also was getting used to seeing the little pig stickers everywhere from her so fair enough.

One day, Oliver needed a pencil and he asked Sara for one since they were in tutoring.

"Sure Oliver, I know I have an extra one in here," She says, rummaging for it until she finds it buried deep in her bag.

"Here you go!" Sara smiles, and Oliver thanks her, their hands touching and a light pink covering both their faces quickly before the moment ends.

It's as if their heartbeats got louder and there were stars in the air when they were around each other.

Sara always wondered if this was supposed to happen whenever she was around him but she didn't think much about it...at least not until later on.

After tutoring and they went home, Oliver noticed the pig on the pencil and chuckled a little bit.

"She always loves these pigs" He mumbled to himself, finishing his work. Once he noticed his mind drifting to Sara, he caught himself.

"No, no, no. No dating in high school. You'll set yourself up to failure." He thought even though his mind always drifted elsewhere.

Her red hair.

Her faraway look when she looked at him.

Her getting frustrated.

Her laugh.

She's-

"No!" Oliver yelled. "I can't be thinking like that." As he ran a hand through his hair, he finished up his work and knew he had to give Sara her pencil back.

-----

"Hereyougo!" Oliver says as he pushes the pencil into Sara Lin's hand, making her raise an eyebrow. Oliver looked around the hallway as people passed wondering if people knew how nervous he was or if he was overthinking. He could never truly tell.

"Oliver, you can keep the pencil. I don't need it back. It's okay!" Sara laughs a bit as she gives him back the pencil but Oliver shakes his head.

"I can't keep your pencil." Oliver quipped and Sara asked why.

"It'd be...rude if I kept it. Yeah. When you borrow something, you return it. You wouldn't keep a library book, right? It doesn't belong to you. You know? And another thing, I-" Oliver rambled on and Sara stared at him.

His blond hair always looks just right.

His glasses are big yet just right for his face all at the same time.

How he rambles and mumbles which lets her daydream unintentionally.

"Oliver, keep the pencil. It's okay. Consider it a gift!" Sara says, pats the pencil in his hand then she passes him and goes to class.

Oliver looked back at Sara as she headed to class.

She just doesn't know the effect she has on him.

As the day went on, Oliver looked for another opportunity to slip the pencil back to Sara and found it during lunch. He slipped it back into her backpack and felt satisfied when he was successful.

When Sara got home, she got ready to do homework when she noticed a certain pencil roll out of her backpack and onto the ground.

She felt her heart thump and she picked it up, realizing Oliver had this pencil and gave it back to her.

He held this.

Once she got over her heart racing, she thought something.

"Did he put this here? Oliver Yang. It's so on!" Sara Lin said with a determined look. She will give him this pencil back.

-----

This was their game.

Sara would put it in his math book.

Oliver would put it in her backpack.

Sara would put it in his locker.

Oliver would return the same gesture.

This went on for weeks.

Eventually, someone would have to cave right?

They did get creative though.

Sara told Oliver she'd made him lunch and made him a piggy bento with you guess it! The pig pencil was in there, making Oliver both smile and be tortured all at once.

Oliver realized Sara didn't eat during lunch one day and gave her an after school snack during tutoring.

Strawberry milk.

A bread pastry.

and of course, one pig pencil.

Sara raised an eyebrow and Oliver looked away nonchalantly.

As they walked home from tutoring one day, Sara looked at Oliver and asked him to stop.

"Oliver, what is up with you and this pencil?" Sara asked and Oliver began to sweat.

"What do you mean Sara? What pencil?" He chuckled nervously and Sara raised an eyebrow.

"Oliver, this pencil and you know it," Sara says, waving her pig pencil around silly.

"Oliver, you don't usually do this. It was fun and games and first but now I'm genuinely confused. What's wrong with the pencil? Wait..." Sara says taking a step forward, which led Oliver to unintentionally take a step back. Sara gently gasped.

"Oliver, do you not like me or something?" Sara asked, a higher pitch coming out.

"NO!" Oliver yelled. Sara looked hurt and her eyes widened. She knew she had a tough time with tutoring but she thought they were friends for sure. Maybe he didn't see that.

"No, that's not what I meant. I meant that is the...opposite of what I meant." Oliver trailed off, mumbling the last part. Oliver closed his eyes to take a breath and when he opened it, Sara was staring at him.

"I need to know what you mean because right now you're confusing me," Sara mentioned and Oliver sighed.

"I mean, I...really like you Sara...as in more than a friend. I didn't want the pencil because it reminded me of you so much that it almost hurt"

Sara gasped and felt her heart race and she smiled.

Oliver liked her back?

Sara takes out the pencil and hands it to him.

"Keep the pencil...because I like you too. Come on." She says as she grabs Oliver wrist.

"Where are we going?" Oliver asked.

"Hotpot. We have a lot to talk about. This day isn't over just yet." She smiled.

AN: So cute.

Fun fact: This is based off my friend and I except we did this with a dollar.

Also, this book may have one more and then it will unfortunately be completed. This was fun for my break to write but I won't have time once I get back to work. It was so much fun to write!
