Sara Lin wants to tell Oliver that she thinks she kinda...you know

Inspired by HSMTMTS (High School Musical the Musical the Series)

I do not own the song, credits to Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Walt Disney, and anyone else who wrote the song.

Sara and Oliver had been going out for four months and Sara knew she loved him.

She loved his glasses. She loved his blond hair which always seemed to be perfect. How her heart skipped a beat each and every time she was around him. How he said the most hilarious things in such a serious way. How her dad enjoyed being around him. How he tutored her.

She knows she loves him but...does he feel the same?

"Ugh, I can't just flat out say it, you know? Like it would just be so painful if I did that and he just looked at me awkwardly. I think we both want to but I'm confused. What do I do?!" Sara groaned and flopped (very dramatically) on her bed. "Boys are so complicated."

"You do know, I am a boy right" Patrick says with one eyebrow raised, pausing his game to look at his best friend. While for a moment, he wished it was him, he knew Oliver was her better match. He noticed Sara was an even better version of herself around him. He did something that Patrick knew he could never do. He was happy to help if it meant Sara was happy.

"Dude, you two write songs together. Write him a song!" Patrick says in the most obvious tone ever and Sara gasps!

"Patrick, YOU ARE A GENIUS! HOW DID I NOT THINK OF THAT?!" Sara squeals. She hugs her best friend and grabs her songbook from her shelf before sitting up crisis crossing onto her bed. She quickly puts her hair up, signaling she's in her focus mode and begins to truly think about how she feels about Oliver. She wanted this to be perfect.

Patrick laughs and rolls his eyes playfully.

The next week went by and Sara was working on her song day and night. She wanted each lyric to flow to the next. She was nervous to put "I love you" in the song so she hoped that this song would be the perfect way to tell him. Sara realized in a few days, they'd be going out after school and decided she would invite him back over then to hear the song. She hoped he liked it.

As Sara was writing the song, she was trying as much as she could to avoid the golden-haired boy without raising suspicion but was not doing the best job. They stopped eating lunch together and Sara always walked ahead of him humming the beat of the song so she could focus.

"Patrick, I know I don't usually do this but....is Sara mad at me?" Oliver asks confused. He looked up and saw Sara writing feverishly before heading out and going to the library. Oliver shook his head in confusion. If he did something, he'd rather Sara tell him than avoid him. If anyone knew, it'd be Patrick.

"Sara is not mad at you. That's all I can say cause she'd kill me otherwise." Patrick slyly smiles, making Oliver twist his face in confusion. If she's planning something, it must be something good. Oliver thanked Patrick before heading to his next class, still wondering what the redhead girl could have up her sleeve.

Friday arrived and it was the perfect weather to grab some Hotpot. Oliver knocked on the Lin family's door three times as he always does and Sara came out and smiled. She had on a yellow sweater, daisies adorning it with black jeans, and her famous Adidas.

"Hi, Oliver. I'm so happy to see you!" Sara smiled and Oliver pulled her in for a hug. He felt that whatever Sara was doing took so much time that he needed to just have a moment where it was them. The hallway stillness took over as Sara wrapped her arms around Oliver, breathing in his cologne, something that quickly became Sara's favorite over the months.

"I'm happy to see you too." He mumbles. They eventually let go and head on down to get Hotpot at Sara's favorite place. They caught up since they didn't see each other as much and eventually made their way back to their respective apartments.

"Hey, I was wondering if you could come in for a bit?  My dad isn't home and there is something I wanted to show you." Sara asked and Oliver nodded. Sara interlinked their hands, leading them through her apartment before closing the door gently and locking it. Oliver took another look around the room, smiling softly at the things that made Sara who she was.

"Have a seat!" Sara said, suddenly feeling nerves take over and Oliver sat on her bean bag chair, slowly sinking in. Sara took a deep breath and before Oliver could ask, Sara began to explain what was running through her mind.

"I know you didn't bring it up, but I wanted to say I'm sorry. I'm sorry if you feel like I am avoiding you or don't want to be around you. It wasn't because you made me mad or anything, but because I wanted to do something. Something you couldn't see." Sara explained and Oliver's eyebrows perked up.

"You know you can tell me anything. What's going on?" Oliver asked concerned. He was wondering if he could have done more than just take Patrick's word for it. He could have asked Sara directly but didn't want to intrude if he wasn't meant to know about this.

"I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you so...I wrote you a song!" Sara says cheerfully, grabbing the ukelele hiding under her pillow along with her songbook. She turned it to the dog-eared page, quickly reminding herself how the song goes. Oliver gently gasped, mouth forming an 'o' shape. He's never had a song written about him so he was honored.

"When did you learn ukelele? Did you always know and didn't tell?" Oliver asked confused and Sara laughed.

"I learned it this past week for the song. I looked at a lot of videos and practiced. I'm shocked my fingers are attached but it was worth it. Listen and tell me what you think?" Sara asked, smiling small and Oliver nodded.

"Of course Sara Lin"

Sara quickly tuned the ukelele to her liking and then began playing and singing softly.

"So much has happened, think of what we've done

In the time that the Earth has traveled 'round the Sun
Winter, Spring, Summer and we're back to Fall
We've been together hand-in-hand through it all
From the minute we kissed and my heart skipped a beat
To the night that we danced, I was swept off my feet
Sure is every year has to come to an end
I'd go spinnin' 'round the Sun with you again and again and again and again
"

Sara took a deep breath before continuing

"I think I kinda, you know

I think I kinda, you know
Like the way that we flow
Like the way that we go
And I love
I think I kinda, you know
I think I kinda, you know
I think I kinda, you know, you know, you know
"

Oliver nodded his head, smiling at Sara. He was so proud of her for even doing this and he knew he was always going to remember this. He got up to come by her, looking at the page halfway through and she smiled.

"I can't help dreamin' of you

Guess I'm sayin' I don't not love you
You know, you know, you know
"

Sara goes back into the chorus one more time, finishing it off and Oliver smiles and claps as she looks down nervously.

"I just...I had it on my mind for a bit and I wanted to tell you but I didn't want it to be awkward you know? Well, you totally know but you know...know what I'm saying right?" She asked, tucking a hair behind her ear. Oliver gently grabs her uke, setting it aside so he can grab her hands. He kisses them gently and brings her head up so she can look into his eyes.

"I love you too Sara. I've had it on my mind for a while but you beat me to it." Oliver says, blushing a bit as Sara smiles big, jumping a bit. He shakes his head before kissing her forehead and looking at her content. He brings her in again, giving one big breath and hug. Sara sighs happily as she hugs him back.

They truly are meant for each other.
