"You know...I don't think Subs likes me Sara" Patrick says as she and Sara walk in the hallway. They had just wrapped up their history class together and were talking about a project they had for two weeks. It was brutal but they both are making it...barely.
"I don't think so. He is very nice to everyone. He's just a bit shyer." Sara Lin advocated. She knew Oliver had his own type of personality but that didn't mean he hated everyone. I mean...He liked her right?
Right?
"I'm telling you he doesn't. Tammy told me he was death-glaring at lunch. I just wanna know what I did to the guy. Matter of fact, I'll ask him today." Patrick says smiling humorsly. While Sara told him that was not the best idea, once Patrick made up his mind, he would not be changing it anytime soon.
Lunch eventually rolls around and Sara goes to save the crew a spot like usual. Joe eventually joins followed by Tammy, Patrick, and lastly Oliver. As they were eating, Patrick clears his throat, signaling everyone to look at him. Sara mentally groans. This can not be good.
"Subs, I must know. Why don't you like me?" Patrick says simply and Oliver begins choking on his food. Joe rushes to get Oliver water as Sara pats his back and checks on him. Oliver nodded and though after drinking the water, color returned to his face, once he realized how close he was to Sara, the red returned. Patrick noticed and smirked.
"I do not have anything against you Patrick. You're perfectly fine." Oliver said, cooly. As Patrick looked between him and Sara Lin, Patrick smiled.
"Hmm...Okay, Subs. Whatever you say. I think I got my answer though." Patrick shrugs as he eats his sandwich. He laughs a little bit while everyone gives him a weird look. Once everyone knew Oliver was okay, Lunch resumed as normal. Tammy hanging on to Patrick, Sara Lin saying how she needs to get better grades, Joe talking about a mystery girl he liked, and Oliver silently observing Sara and Patrick's interactions and mentally wishing it was him.
You know, the usual.
Once lunch was over, Sara and Patrick said bye to everyone as Patrick swung an arm over her and they walked to their next class. Sara laughed at Patrick's silliness, grabbed his hat, and ran into the hallway as Patrick ran after her. When he looked back, Oliver had an unreadable expression on his face and that's when it became even more clear to Patrick that Oliver definitely had a crush on his best friend.
Though Oliver would never say it, he just knew he didn't have a chance.
The Yang brothers and Sara walked home together, talking about their day and anything random that came up in it. Well one did. Oliver had his headphones on and walked without saying much.
"Did Oli have a bad day? Why isn't he talking?" Sara asked Joe quietly and Joe shrugged. "I'll ask when we get inside so it's private for him. Don't worry Sara Lin." Joe smiles and pats her shoulder. Sara nodded but was very concerned. Talking to Oliver was one of her favorite things to do and besides tutoring, this was a for sure time she knew she could...and she couldn't today. It made her a bit sad. She was grateful to Joe for trying to perk her up as they talked about anything and everything she liked. They eventually made it to their apartments and said bye to one another for the day.
Once they got inside, Oliver took off his shoes and tried to rush into their shared room when Joe said "Oh no you don't" and gently tugged Oliver back.
"What was that?" Joe asked confused. Not only did Sara want to know, but so did Joe. His brother did it occasionally when he was thinking but today felt different.
"What was what? What are you talking about?" Oliver said, playing dumb. He knew what he did and it didn't feel good in the moment. He just couldn't face Sara Lin, not after realizing the inevitable. There was no way he had a chance with her. Not when she has a best friend like Patrick. He thought they were different but he doesn't know if it's...that different.
"Oliver, you had Sara and I both worried. Why didn't you talk on the way home? You know you can tell me anything. I just want to make sure you're okay." Joe mentioned. Oliver raised an eyebrow.
"Sara was worried about me too?" Oliver asked quietly. Joe scoffs.
"Of course she was. She's your friend. She even seemed to get a bit down on the way home because you weren't talking. She probably thinks she did something. Did she?" Joe asked him. Oliver got quiet.
"Look, if Sara did something. You should talk that out with her, but you can't ignore her. She lives across from us, you eat lunch with her, tutor her, and are in newspaper club together. You can not stop seeing her anytime soon" Joe explains, confused as to why Oliver is acting like this. He has never really done this before.
"I wouldn't ever want to stop seeing her," Oliver said, staring at Joe, face beginning to turn the tiniest bit red, but Joe didn't notice.
"Then what is the issue?! Is it Patrick? Was he right? Do you not like him? Where did this come from? We have to sort this out bro. These are our friends here and I like them but you need to let me in otherwise I can not help you." Joe looks and steps closer to Oliver, gently placing his hands on his shoulders.
Oliver sighs and says quietly "I do like Patrick, but I don't like how he is with Sara Lin".
"What? They're very close. They've been best friends forever. What's wrong with-" Joe stops mid-sentence and looks and his brother. He looks down and sees Oliver sighs. Joe steps back and thinks about what Oliver said. He also thought about how he was acting lately. A bit different but in a good way. He seemed happier (until today), willing to do more things, and he loves the pencil with a pig sticker, the one Sara gave him.
"You like Sara Lin and you're jealous of Patrick, aren't you?" Joe says and Oliver snaps his head up but stays quiet, gently crossing his arms and letting out a big sigh again.
"Yes, and I think after today, Patrick knows too. I don't know what to do. I don't think I have a chance. This is why dating and thinking of love is stupid at this age. You act like this. I have a science test tomorrow and I have used a lot of my study time on this." Oliver explains. Joe shakes his head.
"Oliver, feelings do not stop. You can not control what you feel or when you feel it. You have to tell people when you feel things. Holding it in is never good for you." Joe explains and Oliver says "Even if they might not like you?"
"Even if that is the case maybe you have better odds than you think," Joe says, shrugging her shoulders. He has heard from someone that Sara Lin does indeed like him, but Oliver needs to ask himself.
"I'll tell her tomorrow" Oliver says and Joe nods his head.
"You've got this bro"
