"If you live with me under the same roof, you'll hear this golden voice everyday."
"Ano 'yan?" Itinuro ko ang hawak niya.
"Star anise." Ibinudbod niya iyon sa kaserola bago haluin. "It adds flavor to the chocolate rice porridge."
"Dami mong alam!
"I missed you teasing me like that."
"Na-miss ko rin luto mo." Ngumisi ako saka kumapit sa braso niya. "Syempre, pati 'yung nagluto."
Pinanood ko ang reaksyon niya. His eyes glimmered in joy and his cheeks flushed. He pursed his lips to stifle a smile.
It felt like reliving our life before--fun, carefree, and at ease.
"Denise? What's the matter?"
Napatingin ako sa kanya, at ganoon din siya sa akin, both eyes having a hint of concern.
"Mom? What about her?" "Me? Why would she want to see me after all these years? I... I don't want to deal with that matter for now. Okay.
"Mom... wanted to talk to me," kibit-balikat niyang sagot sa akin. "Probably because she knows she's going to pass away soon."
Napakurap ako.
"She's hospitalized. She's probably trying to redeem herself on her death bed when she should've done it years ago. She doesn't deserve the peace of mind she didn't give to her children."
"I will face her if that time comes. I actually want her to live longer, you know? She should suffer. She should feel the punishment. Going away too soon is not a punishment... like what happened with my father."
Tumikhim ako. Dave looked like his mood was ruined so I just shut my mouth and nodded.
"Forgiveness is not for everyone to give," he muttered while staring at his bowl.
Yumuko rin ako at tumitig sa sariling pagkain. "I'm sorry."
Napaangat ang tingin niya sa akin.
"Don't say sorry for things that are out of your control. The only people I can blame are my parents."
I still wanted to say something but I stopped myself.
"You should hate them, you know?" mahina ngunit may diin niyang sabi. "Good thing... good thing your mom got her justice... right?"
