It's been three excruciating long weeks since Sunny's transfer. Between our respective teams we've spent a total of 5 full days together.
During the first week, Seaver decided to transfer out to the Domestic Trafficking Task Force, I've heard she's been doing good over there. JJ is back with us, it was a nice surprise after Sunny's departure from our work life. I wish I could be more excited about JJ being back but I just can't.
I miss Sunny. I miss the units dynamic when she was with us. I miss having a partner who understood me, who could keep up with me. I miss her unhinged comments that made me laugh. Miss the way she knew what I was thinking and could finish my thoughts without skipping a beat. I miss it all with her.
I'm sitting in our backyard next to our whole team watching Sunny run around with Jack and Henry. All three of them have our bed sheets tied around their necks like a cape, pots on their heads, and spatchulas that apparently are knight swords.
I can't help the giant smile taking over my face while I watch her with them. Now I understood how she felt when she watched me with Sammy. I want this life with her.
"I'm proposing to Sunny." I let it slip as everyone goes silent.
"What! When?" Garcia asks starting to bounce excitedly.
"Sometime.....anytime...soon.....I don't know...." I stumble on my words. In all honesty I've almost proposed a dozen times now, but I don't want her proposal to be spontaneous. She deserves a grand gesture. One that means something to us.
"Do you even have a ring, pretty boy?" Morgan slaps my back a little rough as he sits up in his chair taking a long sip of his beer.
"Of course I do!" My voice rose an octave.
"I was just checking, didn't know if you needed help picking something out." He smirks.
"No offense but if anyone in this little circle...." Garcia gestures to all of us sitting together. "is qualified to help pick out the ring, it would be yours truly."
"So....what's the engagement ring look like?" JJ questions sitting on Will's lap.
"You know the engagement ring can be traced all the way back to Ancient Rome, which signified a business contract or to affirm mutual love and obedience. It wasn't until 850 CE that the engagement ring was given an official meaning, when Pope Nicholas I declaring that this piece of jewelry represented a man's intent to marry. And it wasn't until 1477 that the first diamond appeared on an engagement ring by the way of Archduke Maximilian of Austria who proposed to Mary of Burgundy with a stone setting shaped like the letter M...."
"Reid! Just tell us what the ring looks like?" JJ interrupts me with an eye roll.
"One of Sunny's favorite books is The Time Traveler's Wife. I was able to find a jeweler who could replica the ring. She actually cried when we watched the movie a couple....." I try to explain but Garcia lets out a long frustrated sigh.
