"I'm taking Sunny to Nevada for a few days. I need to get her out of here. It's been a while since we've visited my Mom." I tell Hotch over the phone as we wait for the plane to take off.
"I think that's a good idea. We'll take care of things here." His voice fills the speaker of the phone. Sunny is tucked into my side, her body curled into a ball. She hasn't left my side since I walked out on our porch, not that I would let her out of my sight. Not now, not ever again.
My priority is protecting Sunny. I didn't care what backlash we would face at the BAU. All I knew was the need to get her far away from Virginia, to get her as far away from her stalker as I can.
The entire flight was me reading one of her current reads this week, A Room Of One's Own. An extended essay by Virginia Woolf based on a series of lectures she delivered. The vast difference of Sunny's taste in literature is a constant reminder at how fascinating she truly is. This brilliant woman that I'm madly in love with can read a book about fairies having sex one day to the next day reading an essay about the intersection of feminism and literature.
We spend time getting comfortable in our hotel room before making our way to Bennington. I don't know why I'm starting to feel nervous. We came here to get Sunny away from Virginia but part of me wanted to come here specifically to tell my Mom in person, that I'm engaged. Wanted her to hear from us in person and not in my daily letters.
Now that I'm standing here watching her sit on one of the couches further back in the open living space, I'm questioning a lot about my choices up to this point. Maybe I should have talked to her about my engagement with Sunny first. Prepared her for this discussion instead of springing it on her. The last thing I want is something to be said that would upset either of the women that mean the most to me.
Dr. Norman comes walking our way with his hand outstretched. Sunny takes it with a shockingly firm shake. His smile grows when he takes in her already beaming face. That's the effect she has on people, making them feel happiness.
"Agent Finnegan it is a pleasure to see you again." Dr. Norman tells her before coming to shake my hand.
"I've told you before Norm, call me Sunny." She advises him.
"Of course, forgive me." He chuckles before turning his attention towards me.
"Dr. Reid, you're mother is going to be happy to see you. Is this a surprise visit or does she know?" He questions.
"Uh. Surprise. This trip...." I look over to Sunny her body tensing as my hand grabs a hold of hers pulling her closer into me. "was a spur of the moment."
