One of Spences legs is bouncing nonstop, making his entire body shake with anxious energy. I'm holding his hand trying to hit his pressure points to relieve some stress and ease his migraine. His headaches have gotten worse, much worse. He's sensitive to light, currently wearing sunglasses inside the hospital while looking towards the ground. I wore mixed matched socks today with him for luck. He found it amusing enough to give me a small smile.
An older nurse comes up to us. "We're almost ready for you, Dr. Reid. Just a few questions." She tells him. He looks up at her for a brief moment before dropping his head and removing his sunglasses.
"Are you having one of your headaches right now?"
I think it's pretty obvious Janice....he's literally wearing sunglasses inside a building and can't even look at you without squinting.
"Yeah, I am." He answers her.
"How long have you had it?"
"Um...not really that long. I don't know" His head tilts up slightly again, his eyes squinted. I'm so worried about him but I'm trying to appear calm so I don't make him more anxious.
"Can you be more specific?"
Janice was really starting to tick me off.
"Uh, maybe 2 days." He answers her.
"And the lights hurt your eyes."
Again....obviously.
Spence nods his head yes.
"Any hallucinations?" He shakes his head "No"
"Ok. I'll be back in a few minutes to take you back Doctor." She gives him a tight smile before walking off. I lean in kissing his cheek. We don't say anything, for the first time in my life I have no idea what to say. No awkward word vomit, no joke to ease the tension. My voice is silent, I've never had someone to worry about, until now.
The nurse comes to take Spence back for his MRI. He leans into me to give me a kiss before following her back disappearing between the double doors. I spend my entire time pacing back and forth. I was practically burning a hole into the linoleum flooring. My cute adorable boyfriend who laughs at my stupid jokes and rambles on for hours at a time about the things he loves most was now quiet, his laughs are few and far between and he's barely reading.....and the worst part about it all is I can't fix it.
I was so lost in thought I didn't even realize he had come back through the double doors. "Sunny?" I jump stopping my pacing to face him. "Are you...."
I put on a fake smile grabbing my bag from the chair. "Ready to go?" I ask cheerfully.
"Ye...yeah." He answers putting his sunglasses on grabbing my hand in his as we walk out of the hospital and towards the metro. We were going to be a little late to work today. Which isn't saying much for me. It's to be expected but Spence. He's only ever been late once before. It's also not going to look great that we are walking in late together but I will tell everyone to fuck off. I'm in no mood to play today.....also I haven't had coffee yet.
