Chapter 30 Part 2

Mari's POV

I watched as Lexi walked down the hall to her room, sketch pad in hand. "Lexi". I sighed. Matt put his arm around me. "I never knew having a kid would be so hard". "Why would she draw something like that". "I don't even know what it was". I looked over at all of the gaming consoles in our cabinet. "You up for a bit of smash brothers" I asked. Matt laughed. "Alright". We played video games until I started to get sleepy. "You ready for bed" He asked. I put the controller down on the coffee table and stood up. "See you in a few minutes"? Matt nodded and put his controller down next to mine. "I'll clean up. You go to bed". "Night sweetie". I got up, kissed him and walked down the hall to our room. I noticed that the lights were off in Lexi's room. I peeked in and saw the girls sleeping soundly under their blankets. I lightly closed the door and walked across the hall to our room. I turned the lights on, flooding the room with light. The mini sitting room with our fan pillows sat in the corner waiting to be used. I slid under the covers. 10 minutes later, Matt came in and laid down next to me. He put his protective arm around me, giving me a sense of safety. But it doesn't protect me from the nightmares. They have been getting worse, just like the ones I had 13 years ago. Every time I have one, I wake up with a start. I end up waking Matt, who then tries to calm me down. Some nights, they are so bad that I start shaking. I woke up the next morning, my cheeks wet with tears. "Mari. Come on. Let's talk about this". "Matt, I'm scared. They're getting worse and more clearer. I can see our faces, who else is there. I can't take this anymore". "Come here. We'll get through this together".

Matt's POV

After I hugged Mari, the girls came out into the living room, laughing. It made me smile, seeing Lexi happy. Then, there was a knock on the door. I walked over and opened it. "Maddi. You're mom's here". Maddi came into the front hallway, bags in hand. "Thank you for having her". "No problem. She's welcome anytime". No sooner did Maddi leave, Shayna's parents came to pick her up. "Bye Shayna. Text you later". She left and I shut the door. "Lexi. Can we talk". "About what? Privacy? Gladly". "Alexis Ginger Sohinki. We did not raise you to have any sass". "I don't understand why I don't get any privacy around here. I don't go into your room and just start looking through things. I'm going to my room. If you need me, just knock". She stormed off with a box of poptarts. Clearly, she wouldn't be joining us when we record today. Mari and I left an hour later for the office, leaving Lexi behind.
