"Guys where are you going!"
"We're leaving." Erica said "Come with us"
"But what about Derek? About Isaac?"
"Isaac said he's coming"
"I can't leave, you know that...but I will make sure you guys get out of town safely" Irene smiled as she pulled Erica in for a hug "Just please stay in contact with me"
"always" Erica smiled.
Irene took Erica's hand and followed her and Boyd to Derek's house out in the woods. They wanted to at least tell Derek they were leaving. Irene decided to stay outside and wait for them, keeping an eye out in case anything was wrong
"You've decided." She heard Derek say from inside "When?"
"Tonight"
"Everyone's gonna be at the game. We figured it was the best time" Boyd told him
"It's not like we want to" Erica sighed
"What do you want?"
"Since I just turned sixteen a month ago, I wouldn't mind getting my license... I can't do that if I'm dead, you know" Erica mumbled
"Well, I told you there was a price" Derek argued
"Yeah, but you didn't say it would be like this!" Boyd argued back
"Yeah, but I told you how to survive- you do it as a pack. And you're not a pack without an Alpha" He yelled
"We know" Boyd replied calmly
"You wanna look for another pack?" He asked in surprise "How are you even gonna find one?"
"We think we already did..."
"Like, all of a sudden, we heard all this howling. It was unbelievable." Erica said in amazement.
Irene felt a bit sad about them leaving but at least in a pack they would be safe. Right?
"There must have been a dozen of them-"
"Maybe more!"
"Yeah, or maybe only two" Derek scoffed "You know what the Beau Geste effect is? If they modulate their howls with a rapid shift in tone, two wolves can sound like twenty"
"Look, that doesn't matter, okay? There's another pack out there. There's got to be...We've made up our minds"
"Yeah. We lost, Derek. And it's over. We're leaving"
"No. No, you're running. And once you start, you don't stop. You'll always be running"
She heard footsteps rushing towards her from the house and saw Erica and Boyd looking rather annoyed. Irene sighed and began to walk Erica and Boyd towards the border of the reserve into the next town. That was the furthest she would go.
They continued walking til the sun went down and the moon rose in the sky. The howling sounded again and it sounded rather close by but Irene felt like something was off
"Guys...run! RUN!" Irene yelled, shoving Erica and Boyd as they all began running after hearing the sound of vehicles closing in
"Come on! Run!" Erica yelled, slowing down for Irene
"Run! Run!" Boyd yelled at them, keeping at the back of the group
"Come on!" Erica yelled, pulling Irene faster as they all continued running
All of a sudden an arrow shot past them as they got to a clearing, skimming Irene's face. She looked back to see two people on black quad bikes. She stood in front of Erica and Boyd, roaring at them before looking at the two betas who had fallen on the ground
