"Satoru."
I can hear him walk towards me, and right before he reaches the door, he stops. I look up, and I am met with the same beautiful boy that I called my fiance a few years back. His eyes are bandaged, and his once shaggy hair now sticks outwards in a style similar to Megumi's. His hands are full of grocery bags, and he is staring intensely at me.
"You kept your word." Satoru says in a very nonchalant way, like he isn't surprised to see me. Like he was expecting me. "We were beginning to lose hope." He says, squeezing beside me, and unlocking the door. He pushes it open, and gestures to me to enter. I am unsure of where to begin, so I just follow his lead.
The flat is exactly how I left it. There are a few new photos, one in specific catching my eye. It's a photo of him and Rukia at her graduation. Satoru notices me staring at it, and speaks to grab my attention. "Have a seat." Satoru says, and then begins to unpack his groceries into the fridge and cabinets.
"Where are they?" I finally speak, referring to Megumi and Tsumiki. "We have some other stuff to discuss first." Satoru says, pulling a can of soda out of his refrigerator, and then joining me on the couch and spreading out his legs. "I can explain, I didn't want to leave... I just-"
"I already know that it was the Higher-Up's doing." Satoru says, cutting me off. I sit there and stare at him, not sure what to say. "You know, that was easy to piece together. I figured it out pretty soon after. Of course, they have yet to admit it, but I know the truth." Satoru says, and then begins to undo the bandage that rests over his eyes.
"You know," Satoru continues, but pauses to take a sip of his cola. He is looking at me with his piercing eyes, it feels like he can see each crevice and corner of my soul. "I expected something like that from them... but not from you. Nine years, (Y/n). Nine years that you didn't reach out." Satoru continues, and I stare at him confused. "But the letters-" I tried to intervene, not sure why he would say that I didn't reach out. Satoru lets out a laugh, which soon turns into a serious face.
"You seriously think a few letters are reaching out? You don't even know half of what the kids and I have been through. I read every letter, praying that you would leave your new address, or phone number." He says in a harsher tone, and I can feel my eyes begin to well up.
"Why didn't you? We could've come to see you. I could have worked something out with the children... We could have gotten married," Satoru's voice cracks, and I can see the sadness on his face. "There's more to it, Satoru. I thought you hated me... I didn't think you would want to see me or allow me to see the kids." I say, but I know that none of it can justify what I did to our family nine years ago.
"No, (Y/n). There's not more to it," Satoru says, but immediately Kai's face appears in my head. "Stop, Satoru. There is more to this, and..." I say, but quickly stand from the couch and rush to the door. "Where are you going?" He yells, and reaches for my hand. "Come." Is all I say, and I pull his hand to lead him into the hallway. "My flat is this way." I say, and begin the walk to the other side of the building. I know what I did wasn't right, and it doesn't justify any of my actions, but these nine years weren't easy on me either. Mourning my life, giving birth, and raising a child alone, it wasn't some sort of vacation.
