"Cheeseeee!"
Kai is posing for the camera, enjoying the attention he's receiving. It's his first day of school, and we all came together to cheer him on. Shoko and I are snapping pictures of him in his new uniform, trying to soak in the moment. Considering that Kai is my youngest, and I highly doubt that I'll have any more, I don't want to miss a single photo opportunity.
Satoru takes the camera from my grasp, complaining that I am not capturing his perfect angles. I roll my eyes and slip to the bathroom. Megumi is fixing his hair in the mirror, when he notices my reflection. "Are you excited?" I ask him. Jujutsu Tech isn't the typical high school experience, and I do feel empathy for his transition from public school to a secret society. Megumi huffs as he finishes perfecting the last spike on top of his head. "I guess." He answers my question, and I give him a soft smile. "You look great, kid." I tell him, and pat his back.
"We're gonna be lateeee!" Satoru shouts from the front door. "We're coming." I respond, already walking towards the door. Kai is clinging onto Satoru's hands, his lunchbox in the other. "You ready, Kai?" I ask the eager eight year old, but I already know the answer to that question. "Can you come on, Megumi?" Kai asks in an annoyed tone, Megumi is pulling a yogurt cup from the fridge. "Hey, don't talk to your brother like that." I tell the stubborn eight year old. "I'm coming." Megumi says, and then joins us at the front door.
We begin on the familiar route towards the local grade school, Satoru and Kai walk slightly ahead of me, hand in hand, while Megumi and I follow behind them. "Kai, did you know that you have the same teacher that Tsumiki and I had?" Megumi asks, picking apart a leaf that we picked up on the way. "Really?" Kai asks, in a curious tone. "Mhm." Megumi hums. For a moment, I get deja vu. I've done this before, a million life times ago.
We approach the buzzing school building, children running around, and parents chasing after them. Navigating the hallways is easy for us, in between the hyperactive kids, and the stressed out teachers, we are able to find Kai's classroom.
His classroom is decorated with primary colors, little ornaments line the windows, and the desks are put together to form groups.
"Oh! You must be the Gojo's!"
A petite lady, Kai's teacher, makes her way to us and greets us at the door. "And this must be Kai!" She says, bending down to meet his eye level. She is a sweet looking lady, brown locks, and a warm smile. "Kai, say hi to your teacher." I encourage the timid boy, still adjusting to his new life. He lets go of Satoru and I's hands, and politely bows. "Your desk is right over here." She says, still smiling. I grin at her, I can tell that she is kind. She leads Kai to his desk, Satoru and I follow, while Megumi stays at the door. I help Kai put away his belongings, and can see him slowly beginning to warm up to his surroundings. "Okay kid, you think you'll be okay?" I whisper in the boy's ear. He looks around the room, I watch as his eyes try to absorb every ounce of energy in the room. He turns to me, wearing a blank face. We stare at each other, and his blank face soon forms a smile. "I'll be okay." He says, standing up from his chair. I embrace him in a hug, proud of my brave boy. He turns to Satoru, who is standing next to me, and gives him a squeeze as well.
