Finding my voice

Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, the destination this train is headed. Me and my brother Theo are joining after being home schooled our whole lives. We know one boy there Lorenzo Berkshire or Enzo for short, he's been our best friend since we were babies and the only male apart from Theo that I'm not scared of. Me and Theo have had a pretty physically abusive life at the hands of our father and two uncles. Our mother died when we were little. The abuse we went through is the reason why I'm well you'll find out.
We stood outside the great hall doors waiting to be announced I had a tight grip of Theo's arm. "If you get to scared just take my hand okay" I nodded. "Boys and girls we have two new students who have been pre sorted in to Slytherin. Joining our sixth years please Theodore Nott and Sophia Nott." The big doors swung open and we walked in.
All eyes were on us but I smiled when I spotted Enzo who blew a kiss at me, typical Enzo. I noticed Theo give Enzo a look who quickly moved his friends away, knowing I would be less scared sitting between him and Theo. After we greeted the headmaster I sat next to Enzo with Theo next to me. Enzo wrapped his arms around me "oh I missed you so much, life is boring without my best friend around" Theo scoffed "em hello Enzo am I invisible." Enzo looked around confused "Hey Sophia did you hear that or was it just a pixie I was hearing." I giggled a little. "Yes! I've still got it." He exclaimed as he hugged me again "I will never get tired of hearing your laugh and hey Theo."
"Finally I exist again." Theo and Enzo have a unique friendship that I don't understand.
"Sorry guys where are my manners. My best friend in the whole entire world Sophia and the spare friend Theo" I giggled at that. "Enzo I love how your way of making her laugh is always at my expense." Enzo rolled his eyes "oh shush Theo you love me really" I was getting fed up now so I smacked them both on the back of the head "sorry Sophia you know I love winding Theo up but again my manners have left me. These are my friends Pansy, Astoria, Draco, Blaise, Mattheo and Tom."  The boy right in front of me was Tom. He was quite handsome with his wavy dark brown hair, brown eyes and defined jaw line. Quite an enchanting and intriguing boy.
"So how come you guys were pre sorted?" The blonde one asked. "Shit Theo I'm sorry I forgot to tell them" Enzo said. Of course he did. "It's fine, don't worry about it. I was sorted in to Slytherin but it was agreed that she wouldn't be sorted and would be placed in the same house as me. She has to stay with me no matter what. She's well different" they all looked at him confused. I tapped his arm and gave him a certain look. "It's nothing bad at all, what I meant was she hasn't spoken a word in five years so that presents some challenges and we don't know what challenges it will bring being here because we've always been home schooled." They all looked surprised. "Will she ever speak again?" He looked at me for permission and I nodded. "Her not talking is trauma induced so it's completely up to her when she talks again. So only she knows the answer to that one."
"How will it work in class then, especially for paired work."
"Headmaster has told all the teachers that she is to be paired with me or Enzo only. If you talk to her she can't talk her reply so she just writes it down. Just have to be patient with her and not lose your temper."
"What happens if someone looses there temper?" Theo smirked "oh that's easy, death to who ever upset her" I nudged Enzo "Theo is a little protective but we both are." A girl I forget the name of replied "Well don't worry none us will upset her."
After the feast Enzo showed us around and then helped me unpack. Theo came to my room and helped change the bandages on my wounds and clean them before he hugged me good night. I still have wounds from my father's last rampage.
For the first few weeks nothing exciting happened although I was a bit less scared of being alone now. Apparently being in the same friend group as the sons of Voldemort was protecting me from the boys. I was currently in the library alone struggling with potions homework I hated potions. I was clearly getting frustrated. I flopped my head down on the table and heard a voice after a few minutes. "You look like you need help." I jumped a little and looked up to see Tom "my apologies, I didn't mean to make you jump." I gave him a smile "would you like some help" he said as he sat down. I nodded with a smile. For the next hour he helped me, talking as I wrote down my reply. "See it's easy" He said. I rolled my eyes and wrote down "it's easy when you explain it like that but Snape makes it sound so complicated." He chuckled "well that darling is because Snape is incapable of proper human communication and quite often forgets that we are only teenagers who are still learning." I blushed a little at the nickname. "I like the nickname" I wrote, he smiled at me "well it's all I'm going to call you from now on." I smiled back. We headed back to common room. "I was about to come looking for you." Theo said. "She was with me in the library, I was helping her with potions homework." Theo looked at me "did you manage okay being helped by someone new" I nodded with a big smile. "Good. Thanks for helping her Tom." He gave Theo a small smile "I was happy to help, I quite enjoyed it as well."
The next day I woke up in agony so me and Theo had to go to Saint Mungos so the healers could check one of my wounds as Madame Pomfrey was a little concerned. After merlin knows how many hours we were back at Hogwarts and joined the group for dinner, Enzo hugged me as soon as I sat down "where on earth have you two been all day I was worried" I thought Theo told him. "Sorry Enzo I didn't have time to warn you. We were at Saint Mungos all day"
"Excuse me what! Why!?" I held Enzos hand and smiled at him to calm him down. I then wrote down "just tell them everything" and showed it to Theo "are you sure?" I nodded with a smile. "The reason we were there all day is also the same reason why she doesn't speak. Our mother died when we were little so we were left in the care of our father and two uncles. They abused and tortured us everyday. I did everything I could to protect her but it three grown men against two kids, there was little I could do. It all came to a head five years ago when they tortured her so bad for talking without permission that she stopped talking altogether. A few weeks before we came here we were subject to another round of abuse and Sophia got it worse than I did. Some of her wounds were really bad and weren't healing right. She woke up in pain this morning so I took to the hospital wing and Madame Pomfrey was worried about the wounds so we were sent to Saint Mungos. It's sorted now though. All that is the reason why she had to stay with me when we first came because she was terrified of every male apart from me and Enzo. We knew it would take time for her to be comfortable around everyone else."
"So that's why Enzo moved us on the day you got here" Theo nodded "Yeah she wouldn't have felt safe if she wasn't between me and Enzo but considering she's sat next to Tom right now you can see she's comfortable now" Me and Tom smiled at each other.  "Theo it's obvious to all of us how far she's come and we're all proud of her." I gave Pansy a grateful smile.
Over the next few weeks I grew closer with Tom and spent most of my time with him now. He was now my permanent potions partner as well. I felt so safe and comfortable with him. I was in my room doing homework when I heard a knock. "Darling I was wondering if you would like to take a walk. I'd like to show you something." I smiled and nodded. After a while we walked I'm to Mertyls bathroom.  I looked at him confused. "Don't worry darling I promise your safe, I know this will all seem odd but you know I will protect you" I nodded, after a few seconds the sinks began to move and a hole appeared. He took my hand and jumped in. "I promise you really are safe and this will all make sense in a minute. Do you trust me to keep going?" I nodded. We walked through a maze of tunnels until we came to a chamber as I looked around I realised this must be the chamber of secrets. Tom who was still holding my hand was stood in front of me "Welcome to the chamber of secrets darling. Its my hide out. All the times you couldn't find me, I was down here. I would like to show you one more thing but I need you stay behind me until I tell you to move okay but I promise you are safe" I nodded. I was nervous but for some reason I trusted Tom with my life.
Tom shouted something in  different language and it was followed by a rumbling sound then out of Salazar Slytherins mouth came a giant snake. Tom spoke to it a different language that I now realise is called parseltounge. He turned around "Your safe darling, I've told him your to be protected not harmed. He only answers to me so he will never harm you." I looked from Tom back to the snake and without realising it I said out loud "b...bas...basilisk." Tom looked at me in shock I then repeated "basilisk" without stuttering this time. He was still to stunned to speak. I giggled, shook his arms and said "T...Tom sp...eak" I hope I can get rid of this stutter. He came out of his trace. "Darling you spoke, your talking. You found your voice and I lost mine. I'm so proud of you."  I smiled at him "th...thanks... T... Tom." The stutter was already frustrating me. "We can work on this together okay. Practice together. I'll help you if you like"
"Yes p... please. No t...tell... Th... Theo" He smiled "this can be our secret".
For the next several months we worked in the chamber on my speech and I now had no stutter and was able to form full sentences again. Mine and Theo's birthday was coming up and I wanted to surprise him so I was working really hard on my speech. "I'm do proud of you darling, you've come so far." Tom was sat on a table that he had somehow brought down. I walked up to him and stood between his legs wrapping my arms around his neck as his hands were on my hips. "Thank you my love" I said before kissing him. We enjoyed a little make out session before we headed back up. As we were walking hand in hand towards the great hall we walked past some Slytherin girls that always make fun of me. "How does the mute get a boyfriend and I'm still single" Tom laughed at her "funny how even without a voice Sophia still has more personality than you do." We arrived in the great hall to see a fight between a Ravenclaw boy and Mattheo. "Why are they fighting?" Tom asked "the guy was flirting with Theo when Mattheo walked in he heard Theo tell the guy he's not interested and that he has a boyfriend but the guy didn't listen so Mattheo went full on protective possessive boyfriend mode." I pulled on Tom's sleeve and he saw the look on my face and that's when Theo realised as well. "Tom get her out of here. We'll try get Mattheo off him." Fighting is something I'm still not okay being around. Theo arrived with a now cleaned up Mattheo. "Sophia I'm really sorry I forgot about the fighting thing" I wrote down "Don't be sorry, it's not like I was there when it started and plus you were defending my brother and I will never be mad at you for doing that, even if it involves fighting" thank merlin not much longer till I won't need to do this anymore.
It was now mine and Theos birthday. Time to surprise him. Me and Tom just entered the great hall for breakfast, it was packed with students and even most of the teachers and head master were there. Tom spotted Theo, I took a deep breathe and nodded. "HEY THEO!!" Tom shouted causing the entire hall to go silent. The whole school knew that I hadn't spoke for five years. "Yeah?" Tom smiled at him "Sophia has a gift for you" me and Theo were stood at two opposite ends of the Slytherin table. Thanks to the silent hall the distance didn't matter. I looked Theo in eyes and said "I love you Theo" the entire hall gasped as Theo's knees instantly gave way and he burst in to tears, thankfully Mattheo was right next to him. After a few minutes he came running up to me both of us with tears in our eyes "you talked" I smiled "yes I did. I started talking about four months ago but I needed a lot of help to get back to normal so Tom's been teaching me and helping me. I decided this would be your birthday gift." He dried the tears off my face " I'm so proud of you sis. So so proud of you. I love you sis"
"I love you to Theo" He pulled me in for a tight hug as the entire hall erupted in applause and cheering. After a few minutes Enzo came running "You better love me to" I laughed "of course I love you to Enzo." I gave him a hug. We heard a glass tapping and saw the headmaster standing up. "Let this be an inspiration to you all that no matter what hardships you go through in life with enough time, patience and love from the people around you to guide you and help you, you can truly achieve anything. A toast to Sophia and a very happy birthday to Theodore and Sophia." The hall erupted in cheers ones again as me and Theo smiled in to our hug. I had never felt so happy.

Tom Riddle senior took away people's lifes and voices but Tom Riddle junior gave me my life back and gave me my voice back.
