Third person POV

Inside Trost District, Hange made their way into the heart of the Survey Corps Division nestled within the bustling city. When they arrived, in a room filled with an air of tension, Commander Erwin carefully perused a conversation transcribed by Eren onto a piece of paper. Guarding the room outside, Moblit kept watch over Isaac and Eliza, their safety paramount in these uncertain times.

" Is this a conversation between Bertholdt and Ymir ?". Commander Erwin's voice broke the silence as he finished scanning the paper.

" That's correct". Hange confirmed, their eyes fixed on the Commander.

" Bertholdt mentioned, 'I'm sure you didn't want to eat a human,' and Ymir replied, 'I wandered around outside the walls for 60 years...' There was also this part about that boy named 'Marcel'". Commander Erwin mused aloud, his brow furrowing in concentration as he reviewed the paper once more.

" In essence, Ymir must have been among the Titans roaming beyond the walls. Whether she was forcibly transformed like the unfortunate souls of Ragako village or through other means is uncertain...

But enduring a 60-year nightmare is beyond comprehension. Titans aren't creatures who willingly strip themselves of humanity to feast on us. There's a tragic element to them, perhaps contributing to our empathy". Hange reflected somberly.

" Are these the first words Eren or Estella recall Ymir speaking ?". Commander Erwin inquired.

Hange nodded solemnly," Indeed. Their memories commence with her asking, 'do you hate me for it ?' From this, it's plausible that Ymir consumed a friend of either Bertholdt, Reiner, or Annie. And that friend must be Marcel... We've witnessed countless individuals falling victim to Titan predation...

Yet, ingesting a human doesn't revert a Titan to its human form. However, if Ymir devoured one of Reiner's companions, they might regain their humanity upon consuming her. In simpler terms, if a Titanized human consumes a shifter, they regain control over their Titan form".

" Allow me to digress momentarily," Hange interjected, their mind racing through past events." This revelation brings to mind our encounter when rescuing Eren and Stella from Reiner and Bertholdt. Recall how they unleashed Titans upon Eren during his escape... Their fervent pursuit raises questions. Why attempt to eliminate him ? I conjecture their aim might have been for another Titan to devour Eren.

If transformation abilities can be transferred through consumption, perhaps the 'scream' they seek from Eren operates similarly. In their eyes, Eren is merely a vessel, expendable. Should the royal government desire to wield the scream, they'd transfer it to a more compliant individual.

Just as Reiner attempted... In essence, if the authorities, possessing knowledge of Titans, harbor a Titan of their own, they'd surely offer Eren as a sacrifice. That's my hypothesis... What course do we pursue ?".

" In a dire scenario... this scheme could result in losing Eren indefinitely. While we deemed him indispensable, losing him would derail our plans to reclaim Wall Maria. Reeves is an ally. Retrieving Eren should be feasible. Any developments from the Reiss inquiry ?". Commander Erwin's voice was measured, yet a sense of urgency lingered.

Commander Erwin rose from his seat, retrieving a hefty tome before handing it to Hange," I've unearthed all available information. One incident, however, merits attention".

" Incident ?". Hange echoed, their curiosity piqued as they flipped through the pages.

Before the discussion could progress further, a soldier burst into the room, breathless and wide-eyed," Commander Erwin ! The Interior Squad demands your surrender ! They're causing a commotion in the city, accusing you of orchestrating a murder !".
