As the sun hovered on the horizon, casting a warm, golden hue over the landscape, everyone was preparing for what would undoubtedly be the most critical mission of our lives: retaking Wall Maria. The atmosphere was thick with a blend of anticipation and dread, the weight of the task ahead pressing down on our shoulders.
This wasn't just another expedition—it was humanity's last stand. I tried to focus on that, on the gravity of what we were about to do, but my thoughts kept drifting back to Eliza and Isaac. That morning, I had managed to steal a few moments with them, enough to say goodbye.
They had put on brave faces, but I could see the worry behind their eyes. Still, I wasn't planning to die—not today, not here. I promised them I would come back, and I intended to keep that promise.
As I stared distractedly at the horses being lowered on the lift to the other side of the wall, a tap on my shoulder snapped me out of my thoughts. I turned to see Draco standing beside me, an unusual expression on his face.
" Look, there". He said, his voice hushed, pointing down over the edge of the wall.
I followed his gaze and my eyes widened in shock. Below us, a crowd had gathered. People—ordinary citizens—were cheering for the Survey Corps. Their voices echoed up toward us, their cheers filled with hope and desperation in equal measure.
" Flegel ?". Hange muttered, sounding as surprised as I felt.
" Whoa... I never thought I'd see anything like this". I whispered, still in disbelief. The sight of people, the same people who once feared and scorned us, now cheering us on? It was surreal.
" Me neither, love". Hange replied, shaking their head as though trying to make sense of it themselves.
" Take back Wall Maria ! The future of mankind is in your hands !". A man yelled from below, his voice hoarse with emotion.
" Captain Levi ! Thank you for saving this town !". Another shouted.
" Please, come back safe ! But get us our land back too !". A woman cried out, her voice cracking with the plea.
Oluo, standing nearby, stared at the crowd in disbelief," I never thought I'd see the day".
Levi let out a small sigh," Well, they blew it".
" Someone was bound to figure it out after all that noise". Hange remarked, their voice carrying a hint of amusement.
Harold, looking somewhat sheepish, scratched the back of his neck," Uh, actually... I ordered the meat from Reeves Company".
" Damn it, Flegel...". Klaus muttered under his breath.
The whole thing was so absurd, I couldn't help but burst into laughter. Nearby, Sasha, Jean, Connie, and Draco were waving their arms dramatically, shouting like performers on a stage, feeding off the crowd's energy.
" You can count on us !". Connie yelled, his voice booming with enthusiasm.
" How long has it been since the Survey Corps had a sendoff like this ?". Oluo mused, his voice soft as if he didn't believe it was real.
" Who knows... Has it ever ?". Harold asked, his brows furrowed in thought.
" As far as I know... it's a first". Commander Erwin interjected, his voice solemn.
There was a moment of silence. Erwin stood at the front of the formation, his broad shoulders tense with the weight of command. Slowly, he raised his fist into the air, a silent rallying cry. At first, we stared in disbelief, unsure of what he was doing. But then, as if on cue, the crowd below erupted into louder cheers, their voices swelling in support.
