Zara's Pov

"Baba, it was Zara who sneaked out! I was against it, but she insisted!"

Ruhi, my step-sister, who is just an year older to me,yelled at my stepfather, her voice dripping with malice.

I felt a surge of anger and frustration, my heart racing with defensiveness. How could she accuse me of something I didn't do?

"I know she's a brat, but you, my child, should have behaved when you knew it was risky"

my stepfather said, as he caressed Ruhi's hair. I felt a pang of jealousy, wishing he would show me the same affection and support.

But then, something unexpected happened. My mother, Maria Shah, spoke up

"Zara poora time apne kamre me thi, so don't blame her for something she didn't do,"

It was a rare moment of support from her, and I knew it wasn't out of love,Even if it was, I didn't want it. Not after 17 years of neglect and indifference. Not after she had never once wiped away my tears or held me close.

After hearing mama's words my stepfather approached me, his eyes blazing with anger.

"Kaha thi tum?"

He demanded, his voice low and menacing.

I could have told him the truth - that I was in my room, alone- but I knew he wouldn't believe me. He only believed his precious Ruhi, his darling daughter.

So I remained silent, my heart heavy with sorrow. I knew what was coming, and I braced myself for the impact. His slap was hard and stinging, leaving a burning sensation on my cheek. He stormed out of the room without a word, leaving me alone and hurting.

I longed for my mother's embrace, for her comfort and support. But she was too busy chasing after her husband. I wanted to cry, to let out all the tears I had held back for so long. But they wouldn't come so easily. They had dried up long ago, when I realized that no one cared enough to wipe them away.

It was 11 at night.

I was alone in my room, surrounded by silence and darkness, I hugged my soft toys the only friends who never abandoned me. Suddenly, Mama entered my room

"Zara, dinner lag gaya hai niche chal kar khaogi ya yahi le aao??"

"Ek din khana nahi khaongi to mai mar nahi jaungi, aap jaye aapke husband ko puche agar unka gussa khatam hogaya ho to" I replied with sarcasm.

"Mere husband tumhare bhi kuch lagte hai zara, baba gussa the na isliye.." she tried to reason with me, I cut her in between

"Isliye thappad maar diya?? Aur kuch nahi lagte hai wo mere  liye kuch b nahi, jo mere baba hai wo mujhe akela chordke chale gaye, aur aap bhi kuch nahi lagti meri, to ye dikhawa na kare meri fikar karne ka, jaaye aapke precious ruhi ke nakhre uthaye"
I shot back, my anger and frustration boiling over.

"Mai maa hu beta tumari, mai kyu tumara bura chahungi" she tried to defend herself

"Aap sirf paisa chahti hai mama aur kuch nahi"...I cut her off, my voice cold enough

"Mai dua karungi beta tumara dil hamare liye saaf hojaye" she said

"Dua karni ho to yeh karna ki mai apne baba ke paas chali jao" my voice cracked with hurt

She left the room without a word.

Author's POV-

Zara drifted off to sleep, surrounded by her soft toys, her heart heavy with sorrow. Unaware of, two brothers, older and unknown to her, She clutched the toys tightly. "I wish I never had to wake up again," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"I wish I could just sleep forever."

She closed her eyes, her mind filled with thoughts of her mother's rejection, her family's cruelty, and her step father's indifference. As she drifted off to sleep, she felt a sense of escape, a temporary reprieve from the suffering that had become her life.
