Ahaan lay in bed, a heavy weight settling in his chest since morning. His heart ached for no reason, and an unshakable fear whispered in his mind, as if someone would snatch his loved ones away from him soon or he would be snatched away from them. His eyes remained damp, and irritation covered his face despite his efforts to hide it. The thought of not being close to his siblings was unbearable.
Bua ji knocked on the door and entered his room.
"Ji bua ji? Kuch hua?" Ahaan asked sitting up.
"Ahaan baba wo ijazat chahiye thi mujhe!" Bua ji said softly
"Kis chiz ki bua ji?"
"Mai kuch din ke liye apne gao jana chahti hu, meri bhen ki tabiyat khraab hai!" She said
"Kab jaengi?" He asked trying to sound calm.
"Agar aap ijazat dein to abhi niklungi!"
"Theek hai bua ji chali jaayein, driver se kehna chord aayega akele mat jaayein, bua ji jaane se phele ek baar sabko kaam samjhakar jaayein na naye hai sab aap nahi hongi toh gadbadi na karein!" Ahaan said
"Ji mai samjha dungi aap pareshan na ho, koi kuch nahi karega!" She reassured him
Ahaan opened his drawer and took out some cash.
"Yeh rakhein bua ji!" he said, handing her the money.
"Nahi nahi mujhe nahi chahiye waise bhi mujhe iss baar time se phele hi apni salary milgayi!" Bua ji denied
"Rakhlein na, beta kehti hai mujhe aur mana karti hai!" Ahaan forcefully handed the money to her.
"Mai jaldi aajaongi apna bohut khyaal rakhiyega!" Bua ji patted his face and left
Ahaan nodded and laid down again. He couldn't shake off the feeling that he might have to leave his loved ones behind, and the thought was tearing him apart.
"Zara sojao, kitni dafa kaha hai ki 10 baje lights off hojani chahiye!" Ahaan snapped at her in irritation when she came in his room to take her phone
But Zara had her own little secret plan. She wanted to celebrate his birthday at exactly 12 o’clock. For the past hour she had endured his constant scoldings with a mischievous smile hidden behind her pouting face.
"Bhaiya dekhein, meri baat sune aap, kal kya hai?" Zara asked
"Kya hai!" Ahaan asked rolling his eyes knowing the answer very well that its his birthday
"Sunday hai bhaiya kya aap bhi, aap chill karein mera aur bhai ka movie ka plan hai kya hum log ek din late night jaag ke enjoy nahi karsakte, subah time se uthjaongi aap pareshan na ho!" Zara squired away as quickly as possible managing to bring smile on Ahaan's face with her mischief.
Exactly at midnight, the door of Ahaan’s room creaked open. Zara entered, holding a small cake decorated clumsily with sprinkles, Umer following close behind her.
"Happy birthday bhaiya!" They both shouted on top of their lungs.
Ahaan who was busy wondering why he is anxious, flinched, he stared at two of them Zara with her soft smile and Umer standing protectively next to her. In that moment, the heaviness in his chest deepened. His irritation melted, replaced by a sharp ache. His throat tightened.
He quickly looked away, forcing a smile, afraid they’d see the storm inside him.
"Bhaiya kya hogaya? Aap rorahe ho?" Zaraa was quick to notice the glint in his eyes.
Ahaan shook his head, pulling them both into a sudden tight hug as if holding them would keep them with him forever.
"Kuch hua hai? Aap kuch chupa rahe ho humse?" Umer asked worriedly
