[1996]

The night air was thick with the scent of pine as Evelyn and Lottie walked through the woods towards the party. Lottie, though still a bit nervous around Evelyn, was making an effort to be more relaxed in her presence. They exchanged small talk about school, upcoming exams, and finally landed on the topic of the Nationals.

"So, are you excited for Nationals?" Lottie asked tentatively, glancing sideways at Evelyn.

Evelyn smiled warmly at Lottie, appreciating her effort. "I would be if I were actually participating. But you guys are going to crush it, I'm sure."

Lottie nodded eagerly, her excitement palpable. "Thanks! We've been training non-stop for this. It's like our chance to show everyone what we're made of."

Evelyn chuckled softly. "Well, you already showed us back at States," she said, a hint of bitterness creeping into her tone.

Lottie hesitated, sensing Evelyn's discomfort with the topic. "Yeah, that game was... intense," she replied carefully, unsure of how to navigate the conversation.

Evelyn nodded, her expression growing distant as she tuned out of the conversation. She didn't want to dwell on their team's loss to the Yellowjackets again. It was a sore spot for her, a reminder of both their defeat and her outsider status among them.

As Evelyn and Lottie approached the edge of the clearing, where the party was in full swing, the distant thump of music grew louder. The canopy of trees overhead cast shifting shadows across the forest floor, illuminated intermittently by the glow of string lights strung between branches.

Lottie glanced at Evelyn, a nervous smile playing on her lips. "I think everyone's already here," she said, attempting to break the silence that had fallen between them after their conversation about nationals.

Evelyn nodded absently, her mind still lingering on the conversation. She forced a smile, trying to shake off the lingering bitterness. "Yeah, looks like it."

As they neared the clearing where the party was in full swing, the sounds of laughter and music grew louder, filling the night air with an infectious energy. Evelyn, feeling the tension from the previous conversation, took a deep breath, ready to dive into the festivities and leave the past behind.

They emerged into the clearing, greeted by the sight of students scattered around a bonfire, dancing, talking, and enjoying the night. Lottie, still trying to project confidence, led Evelyn towards a group of Yellowjackets, including Van, who welcomed them with open arms.
