— I TOLD YOU —

[1996]
"Hello? Hello? Is anybody in there?!"
"Hey! Is anybody home?!" Taissa's shout echoed through the quiet woods.
Jackie approached the weathered door of the cabin, gripping the rusted handle tightly. With a grunt of effort, she pushed against the resistance, the door creaking open reluctantly. The interior was dimly lit by the fading daylight filtering through the dirty windows, casting long shadows across the dusty floor.
The others cautiously entered, their eyes scanning the room for any signs of life. The air inside was musty, carrying the scent of old wood and neglect. Cobwebs hung from the corners, and dust motes danced in the sunbeams that filtered through the cracks in the walls.
Meanwhile, Lottie remained outside with Natalie, their attention focused on Evelyn lying on the stretcher. Lottie spoke quietly to Natalie, her voice tinged with concern. "Maybe we should stay out here, Nat. Keep an eye on Evelyn."
Shauna overheard Lottie's hesitation and turned back towards them, her brow furrowing with determination. "No, Lottie. We need to get Evelyn inside. She needs to lie down properly, and we might find something here to help her."
Lottie hesitated, torn between her desire to stay close to Evelyn and her uncertainty about what they might find inside the cabin. Before she could protest further, Shauna reached them.
Shauna stepped closer to them, her voice softening slightly. "Lottie, if you want to stay out here, that's fine. But Natalie, I need your help getting Evelyn inside. We can't leave her out here."
Natalie nodded decisively. "Let's get her in," she said, her voice steady as she adjusted her grip on Evelyn's stretcher.
Together, Natalie and Shauna carefully guided Evelyn's stretcher further into the cabin, navigating around the dusty furniture and cobwebs. They found a clear space in what appeared to be a living area and gently lowered Evelyn onto an old couch covered with a faded quilt.
"You guys, check the pantry, see if there's any food. Everyone else, look around for stuff we can use—first aid, flashlights, tools," Taissa instructed, her voice firm with authority.
Jackie nodded, her eyes scanning the cluttered shelves. She approached the pantry, her stomach growling faintly with hunger. With a hopeful expression, she reached for the door and pulled it open. The hinges squeaked in protest, revealing shelves lined with dusty cans and jars. She grabbed a can labeled "beans" and inspected it briefly, then moved to grab another. Taissa's voice abruptly cut through her thoughts, her tone sharp and disapproving. "What the hell? Jackie, that's not your personal buffet."
