[1996]
The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm, golden glow over the woods. Lottie, adorned in a crown that resembled antlers, stood at the center of a clearing. She carefully lit a candle and raised it high, her voice clear and resonant. "Let the Doomcoming begin."
Javi, standing nearby, rang a gong, the deep, echoing sound signaling the start of the event. Evelyn entered the clearing, her face lighting up with a smile as she caught sight of Lottie. She walked over and gently slotted herself beside Lottie, leaning in slightly.
"You look amazing, Lottie," Evelyn complimented, her voice sincere.
Lottie blushed slightly, smiling back at Evelyn.
Evelyn glanced toward the entrance, watching as pairs began to arrive. Each one was dressed up, looking beautiful in the soft afternoon light. Van and Taissa delighted everyone by entering hand in hand, their smiles radiant.
As they made their way forward, Mari leaned over to Akilah, curiosity etched on her face. "Are they...?" she asked in a hushed tone.
"Duh," Akilah replied with a grin.
Van and Taissa paused, then shared a tender kiss. The group erupted into cheers and applause, celebrating the couple's courage and love. Evelyn clapped along with everyone else, but her attention was soon drawn to Natalie. She caught the same look on Natalie's face that she had seen before whenever she looked at Travis—an expression of longing and affection.
Lottie noticed Evelyn's distraction and gently placed her hands on Evelyn's arms, grounding her in the moment. She leaned her head on Evelyn's shoulder, a contented smile playing on her lips as she watched the joyful scene unfold before them.
Everyone began sampling the drinks and food laid out on a long wooden table. Evelyn found herself conversing with Jackie on the side, the two of them sharing stories and laughing together.
"Have you tried the punch yet?" Evelyn asked, nodding towards the large bowl in the center of the table.
Jackie shook her head, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Not yet, but I'm sure it's spiked."
Evelyn chuckled, "Probably."
Just then, Shauna approached them, carrying a plate of food. She sat down beside Jackie and offered her a cup, her eyes earnest. "Please, have some food. For me?"
