"I can't keep pretending. I love you, more than I've ever loved anyone. And it terrifies me, but it's the truth. I need you to know."

[1996]
As the group gathered firewood, Evelyn stood on the side, arms crossed, her eyes following the movements of Taissa and Lottie as they carefully brought Jackie's body outside. The sight made her catch her breath, the result of Shauna's actions now much clearer in the harsh daylight.
They laid Jackie's body down next to the pyre they were making. Lottie stood beside Evelyn, bumping her shoulder gently.
Akilah, looking thoughtful, asked, "Should we save her clothes?"
Taissa frowned. "You want to strip her naked?"
Akilah shrugged, trying to explain. "I mean, her jacket, mostly. It seems a shame to waste it."
Shauna, sitting not far away, snapped, "No one is taking Jackie's jacket."
Van, trying to reason, said, "Shauna, it's worth talking about."
Shauna stood, walking closer to them. "No! Okay, we're not fucking debating whether Jackie gets to keep her clothes."
Mari crouched down, starting to tug at Jackie's jacket. "It's not like she needs them."
Shauna shoved her. "Stop!"
Mari glared back, her voice laced with sarcasm. "Oh, now you're her protector? Too little too late."
Shauna launched forward, hitting Mari and shouting, "Fuck you, Mari! Fuck you!"
Taissa rushed in to separate the two, grabbing Shauna by the shoulders. Just then, Lottie rushed forward, pushing Taissa with a surprising force. Taissa stumbled and fell down.
"Give her some space," Lottie demanded, her voice sharp and commanding.
The group instinctively obeyed Lottie's command, stepping back and giving Shauna the space she needed.
Evelyn moved quickly to Taissa's side, helping her to her feet. Taissa's glare was fixed on Lottie, her eyes blazing with anger. She dusted herself off, her movements clearly frustrated, before turning to walk away.
Evelyn looked back at Lottie, her expression a mix of disappointment and concern. She took a deep breath, trying to find the right words.
"Lottie, what the hell was that?" Evelyn said, her eyes narrowing as she looked at her.
