[1996]

Evelyn sat in a secluded corner of the camp, her knees drawn up to her chest and her head resting on them. She muttered to herself, her frustration and disappointment evident in every word. "I can't believe they left me behind... choosing Travis over me... it's ridiculous." She traced patterns in the dirt with a stick, her agitation growing.

"I'm not useless... I could've helped... but no, they think I'm too injured to do anything." She kicked a small rock, sending it skittering across the ground. "It's not fair."

Unbeknownst to Evelyn, Misty had been watching her from a distance, her curiosity piqued by the sight of Evelyn's obvious distress. Misty approached cautiously, her steps light and hesitant. She stopped a few feet away, awkwardly waiting for Evelyn to notice her presence.

After a few moments, Evelyn finally looked up, her eyes narrowing as she spotted Misty standing there. "What do you want?" she asked sharply, her tone defensive.

Misty shifted nervously, her gaze flickering to Evelyn's stomach where the wound was still healing. "I, um... just..."

Evelyn's eyes followed Misty's gaze, and she let out a frustrated sigh. "If you're here to check on my wound, you can get lost," she snapped, her patience wearing thin. "I'm fine."

Misty's expression softened, a mix of empathy and determination in her eyes. "It's not just about the wound, Evelyn," she said quietly. "I know how it feels to be left out, to feel like you're not being taken seriously. But they care about you. They just want to keep you safe."

Evelyn's shoulders slumped, her anger giving way to a deeper sadness. She looked away, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just... I hate feeling useless."

Misty inched closer to Evelyn, her steps cautious but deliberate. She knelt down beside her, her voice soft and reassuring. "You're not useless, Evelyn. I mean, yes, you couldn't do much considering you've almost been cut in half, but you're not useless."

Evelyn chuckled slightly at Misty's words, the sound almost foreign after the turmoil of the past days.

Misty gave a small, tentative smile. "Hey, if it makes you feel any better, I also feel useless sometimes," she admitted, her tone genuine.

Evelyn looked at her curiously. "How so?" she asked, her interest piqued despite herself.

Misty glanced down, fiddling with her fingers. "I try to help, you know? To be what Coach Ben needs. But... deep down, I know he doesn't really like me. I feel it. I have feelings too," she whispered, her voice tinged with sadness and vulnerability.
