"I can't keep pretending. I love you, more than I've ever loved anyone. And it terrifies me, but it's the truth. I need you to know."

[1996]
Everyone was gathered outside the cabin, huddled together. The tension was thick, the silence broken only by the occasional rustling of the wind through the trees. Taissa stood at the forefront, her expression resolute as she laid out her plan.
Van, sitting in front, frowned. "Tai, everyone thinks this is a bad idea."
Taissa met her gaze, her jaw set. "Well, we have to do something. We're starving. There's nothing to hunt."
Misty, always eager to contribute, piped up. "The animals might be migrating."
Taissa nodded, acknowledging Misty's input. "That's probably why the only game we've seen for weeks was that one sick deer." She paused, looking around at the group. "And it's just gonna keep getting colder, and not 'I better put on a coat' cold. We're talking 'dying feels like falling asleep' cold."
The gravity of her words hung in the air, everyone absorbing the dire reality of their situation. The forest, once a place of solace and survival, had turned into a barren, hostile environment. The scarcity of food and the biting cold were threats they could no longer ignore.
Laura Lee, turned to Lottie, who was sitting quietly, playing with Evelyn's hands. "What do you think, Lottie?"
All eyes turned to Lottie, but she didn't glance up. Instead, she murmured, "I don't know," bowing her head further.
Taissa took a deep breath, trying to keep the frustration out of her voice. "Look, guys, anyone who wants to come with me is welcome, but I'm going."
Evelyn nodded in agreement, her expression determined. She was with Taissa on this one.
Akilah spoke up, practical as always. "You're gonna want to take stuff with you, right? Like food and supplies? That's not up to you."
Shauna, who had been silent until now, stepped forward. "Well, you can't just send her out there with nothing."
Van shook her head, her voice rising with emotion. "This is insane. We don't know where we are, just that we're surrounded by big-ass mountains. What are you now, Edmund fucking Hillary?"
Mari, confused, asked, "Who?"
Taissa sighed, trying to keep the group focused. "Like I said, we're not on an island. If we go south, we've got to run into something eventually. A road, a town, anything."
