[1996]

Evelyn, Lottie, Gen, and a few others were huddled together, joking and sharing stories to pass the time.

Evelyn leaned in closer to Lottie, who was animatedly recounting a funny memory. "And then, she just fell right into the mud!" Lottie exclaimed, causing everyone to burst into laughter.

Gen wiped a tear from her eye, still giggling. "I wish I could've seen that."

Suddenly, the laughter died down as Natalie and Travis emerged from the forest, holding hands. The two of them looked content and slightly disheveled, clearly having enjoyed their time together. The sight of them made Evelyn's smile falter, her energy deflating in an instant.

The group noticed the new arrivals, and a chorus of teasing began.

"Ooh, Natalie and Travis sittin' in a tree. K-I-S-S-I..." one of them started.

Lottie, always quick with a comment, smirked and added, "I think they were doing a bit more than kissing."

Mari backed her up, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Hey, Nat, what exactly are you and Flex hunting for out there, anyway?"

Van couldn't resist chiming in with a cheeky grin. "I hear it's beaver season!"

Evelyn forced a laugh, though her eyes betrayed her true feelings. She glanced away, trying to mask her discomfort.

Lottie, noticing Evelyn's unease, nudged her gently. "Hey, you okay?"

Evelyn nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah, just... tired, I guess."

Natalie rolled her eyes and stuck her middle finger up at them, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Ah, sit and spin, assholes."

As the group laughed, Natalie caught Evelyn's gaze. The smile on her face faded slightly, sensing the sudden change in Evelyn's demeanor. Before anyone could dwell on it, Jackie intervened with her usual bluntness.

"Is this why we don't have any food? 'Cause you've been too busy running for mayor of pound town?"

Natalie turned to Jackie, her irritation clear. "Uh, go fսck yourself?"

Jackie smirked, undeterred. "I guess we shouldn't be surprised. Nat's always down for a good time, right?"

Natalie clenched her fists, trying to keep her composure. "I can't magically conjure a deer, Jackie."
