Natalie sat in her car, parked in front of the address Taissa had given her, her heart pounding loudly in her chest. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, her knuckles white from the pressure. The house before her was massive, a complete contrast to the modest homes she was used to. It was big and spacious, with an immaculately kept lawn and large windows that hinted at the luxury within.
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. This was it. She had to do this. Evelyn was their best shot at getting the money they needed. The thought of asking her for help was daunting, but desperation had pushed Natalie to this point.
Natalie turned off the engine and sat in silence for a few moments, gathering her resolve. She stared at the house, her mind racing with thoughts of how this conversation might go. The imposing facade, the pristine lawn, the elegance of it all—it screamed Evelyn.
Finally, Natalie exhaled sharply, steeling herself for what lay ahead. She pushed open the car door and stepped out, her shoes crunching softly on the gravel driveway. She took a few hesitant steps towards the house, taking in the grandeur of it all. The house was even more impressive up close, with its meticulously trimmed hedges and flower beds bursting with color.
Natalie paused at the bottom of the steps leading to the front door, her heart pounding harder. She glanced around, taking in the serene surroundings. This was Evelyn's world now—clean, neat, and undeniably affluent. A world far removed from Natalie's own struggles.
As she took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock on the door, a small voice interrupted her thoughts. "Hi."
Startled, Natalie turned around to see a young boy standing a few feet away, looking up at her with wide, curious eyes. He was about five years old, with tousled blond hair and a bright, inquisitive expression.
"Hi," Natalie replied, her voice softening as she crouched down to his level. "What's your name?"
"Jack," the boy said confidently. He seemed unfazed by the presence of a stranger in his driveway.
"Nice to meet you, Jack," Natalie said, smiling despite her nervousness. "Do you know who lives here?"
Jack nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, me, Mommy, and Daddy."
