The cabin was quiet, the only sound the crackling of the fire and the occasional gust of wind rattling the windows. Outside, the others were gathered, talking and laughing as they tried to distract themselves from the ever-present cold. Evelyn sat by the window, her gaze fixed on the group outside, her thoughts wandering.

She barely registered the soft footsteps behind her until a familiar voice broke the silence. "Hey," Natalie said, her tone tentative as she approached.

Evelyn turned her head slightly, her expression guarded. "Hey," she replied, her voice flat.

Natalie hesitated for a moment, then sat down on the edge of the window seat, a few feet away from Evelyn. "It's kind of nice seeing everyone like this, isn't it?" she ventured, her eyes flicking to the group outside.

Evelyn nodded absently, her attention still on the scene outside. "Yeah, I guess."

Natalie glanced at Evelyn, noticing the distant look in her eyes. She took a deep breath, deciding to push a little harder. "You've been quiet lately," she said gently. "Is everything okay?"

Evelyn sighed, finally turning her gaze to Natalie. "Just... a lot on my mind," she admitted, her voice softening.

Natalie nodded, her expression understanding. "I get that. It's been rough for everyone."

There was a moment of silence, the tension between them palpable. Natalie shifted slightly, her knee brushing against Evelyn's. "I miss this," she said quietly. "Just talking. Being together."

Evelyn looked at Natalie, her eyes searching for sincerity. "Yeah," she said softly, her walls beginning to lower. "Me too."

Natalie smiled, the tension between them easing just a little. "Remember when we used to stay up all night talking about everything?" 

Evelyn's lips curled into a faint smile. "Yeah, I remember," she said, her voice warmer now. "Those were good times."

Natalie's eyes softened as she looked at Evelyn. "I miss those times. When everything was simpler."

Evelyn nodded, the tension in her shoulders easing a little. "Yeah, me too."

Natalie took a deep breath, her expression serious. "I know things have been different lately. And I'm sorry if I've been distant. It's just... this whole hunting thing with Travis, it's been..."
