[1996]

The fire crackled softly as Shauna laid down the meat on the table. The group eagerly dove in, their hunger overriding any sense of etiquette. Shauna glanced around, noticing the absence of two members. "Should we wait for Natalie and Travis?" she asked, her brow furrowed with concern.

Coach Ben, seating in a corner, shook his head. "Uh, you know what? I'm pretty sure they've got some stuff to sort out, so... they can eat when they get back."

Evelyn, hearing this, rolled her eyes. She was well aware of the "stuff" Natalie and Travis had to sort out. Across the table, Van looked at Lottie, curiosity etched on her face. "Lottie, last night you said we wouldn't be hungry much longer. How did you know?"

Lottie, chewing on a piece of meat, sneak a glance at Evelyn before answering, "I just did." Her tone carried a hint of pride, knowing she had brought food to the table for Evelyn and everyone else.

Jackie, sitting beside Evelyn, chimed in, her voice carrying a mix of skepticism and annoyance. "Yeah, it's called getting lucky. The bear probably just smelled us and came looking for food, okay?"

Evelyn nudged Jackie gently, trying to stop her from causing any more fight. Jackie turned to her, a look of exasperation on her face. "What? That bear probably had something wrong with him. It didn't look sick."

Jackie then leaned closer to Evelyn, her voice softening. "And I know you're waiting for Natalie, but you should probably eat now." She held up a piece of meat to Evelyn's fork, waiting for her to open her mouth.

Evelyn hesitated for a moment but then complied, opening her mouth and letting Jackie feed her.

Lottie's eye twitched as she watched the interaction, feeling a surge of jealousy. She already had to worry about Natalie, and now Jackie was becoming another source of competition for Evelyn's attention.

Jackie, oblivious to Lottie's reaction, smiled warmly at Evelyn. For once since that night, she hadn't left Evelyn alone, and the thought of it made Lottie sick. She couldn't stand the idea of someone else getting Evelyn's affection.

"Honestly, at this point, I don't even think I care. Can we just eat?" Mari said, breaking the tense silence.

Van looked around the group. "Wait. Should we maybe... say something? Like, like thanks or grace or... whatever?"
