[1996]

Jackie was still fidgeting with the cassette player, her fingers trying every possible combination of buttons and switches in a desperate attempt to fix it. She sighed heavily, frustration mounting as the player remained stubbornly silent. Finally, she set it aside with a resigned huff and looked around the camp.

Her gaze landed on Shauna, who was sitting a short distance away, staring intently at something. Jackie followed Shauna's line of sight and soon realized what—or rather, who—had captured her friend's attention. Evelyn was busy helping Akilah with sorting and organizing herbs, her movements careful and precise despite the bandages that wrapped her midsection.

Jackie furrowed her brows, curiosity piqued. Evelyn's presence had always been a focal point, her strength and caring nature standing out in the harsh wilderness. But the way Shauna was looking at Evelyn now, there was something different in her eyes—an intensity, a focus that Jackie hadn't noticed before.

Shauna was completely absorbed, her expression unreadable but undeniably captivated. Jackie felt a pang of something she couldn't quite place—jealousy? Concern? She wasn't sure, but it gnawed at her, pushing her to break the silence.

"Hey, Shauna," Jackie called out softly, trying not to startle her. "What are you looking at?"

Shauna blinked, her trance broken, and she turned to face Jackie with a slight flush on her cheeks. "Oh, uh, nothing," she stammered, clearly caught off guard.

Jackie raised an eyebrow, not buying it for a second. "Doesn't look like nothing," she said, a teasing tone creeping into her voice. She glanced back at Evelyn, who was now carefully placing the herbs into neat piles.

Shauna shifted uncomfortably, her eyes darting back to Evelyn before meeting Jackie's gaze. "I was just... thinking," she said, her voice uncertain.

"About what?" Jackie pressed gently, her curiosity growing. "Evelyn?"

Shauna's cheeks flushed a deep red, and she stumbled over her words. "W-what? No... I didn't—I mean, I'm not—" she stammered, clearly flustered.

Before Jackie could press further, Mari came rushing out of the cabin, her voice rising in panic. "Get it off, get it off, get it off, get it off!"

Seizing the opportunity to change the subject, Shauna quickly got up and approached Mari. "Hang on. Hey, hang on. Hey," she said, trying to calm her down.
