[1996]
Evelyn stirred from a restless sleep, her head throbbing with the dull ache of a hangover. Sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a gentle glow across her bedroom. Just as she started to drift back into sleep, a knock on her door jolted her awake.
"Miss? It's time to get ready for the flight," came a soft voice from the other side.
Evelyn groaned inwardly, pushing herself upright in bed. Her memories from the night before flooded back, fragmented and blurry. She vaguely recalled the party, the laughter, and the persistent presence of Shauna's intense gaze. The migraine pounding in her temples was a stark reminder of how much she had indulged.
With effort, Evelyn swung her legs over the side of the bed and rubbed her temples. The door creaked open, and her nanny, Mrs. Jones, stepped inside with a sympathetic smile.
"Rough night?" Mrs. Jones asked gently, handing Evelyn a bottle of pills.
Evelyn managed a wry smile as she took the bottle and read the label. "Thanks. You figured I'd go home wasted, huh?"
"You're not as subtle as you think. Drink plenty of water with those. It's going to be a long day."
Evelyn nodded gratefully, uncapping the bottle and swallowing two pills with a sip of water from the bedside table. The medicine began to dull the edges of her headache, providing a bit of relief. She glanced at the clock and realized she had less than an hour to prepare for the flight.
After Mrs. Jones left the room, Evelyn moved with a sense of urgency, shedding her pajamas and opting for comfortable travel clothes. She splashed cold water on her face to shake off the last remnants of sleep and refreshed herself quickly. Despite the lingering headache, her mind was focused on the day ahead.
As she packed a small carry-on with essentials, Evelyn's thoughts drifted back to the party. Shauna's piercing stare, the awkward compliments from Lottie, and the general haze of alcohol-induced frivolity—it all felt like a distant dream. She wondered what Shauna had been so intent on conveying with those glances and if there was more to their encounter than met the eye.
With her bag packed and her headache easing, Evelyn headed downstairs, where Mrs. Jones was waiting by the door. The nanny offered a reassuring smile as Evelyn approached.
"Feeling better?" Mrs. Jones asked kindly.
"A bit," Evelyn replied honestly, grateful for the nanny's understanding. "Thanks for the pills."
