[1996]

The sun had barely risen, casting a pale light over the interior of the cabin. Evelyn sat by the window, her eyes heavy and bloodshot from a sleepless night. The events of the previous day played over and over in her mind, the worry for Van gnawing at her insides. Those fucking wolves. She stared out at the forest, the trees standing like silent sentinels, offering no comfort or answers.

Across the room, Laura stood quietly, observing the sleeping forms of her friends. Her expression was one of contemplation, as if she was trying to gather her thoughts. Finally, she took a deep breath, stepping forward with a determined look.

"I have an announcement," Laura said, her voice firm but quiet. There was no immediate response, the others still lost in their exhausted slumber.

Frustrated, Laura grabbed a spoon from a nearby table and clattered it against a metal cup. The sudden noise jolted everyone awake, eliciting groans and mumbles of protest. Evelyn, however, remained silent, her gaze drifting back to the window.

"Hi! Excuse me!" Laura repeated, her tone sharper now as she tried to command their attention.

Jackie rubbed her eyes, sitting up with a frown. "Laura Lee, what the hell?" she muttered, her voice groggy.

Laura stood before them, waiting for the group to fully wake up and focus on her. "Thank you," she began, her eyes scanning their faces.

Lottie, still half-asleep, rubbed her eyes and looked around in confusion. "What's going on?" Lottie asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Laura took a deep breath, her resolve firm. "In light of the expedition ending as it did, I have decided that I'm going to take the dead guy's plane and fly south. I'm going to find us help, and I'm going to get us out of here."

The announcement caught Evelyn's attention. She turned from the window, her eyes widening with surprise. Lottie, now more awake, sat up straight. "You're gonna fly?" she asked, her tone incredulous.

Natalie looked at Laura, her face pale. "But y-you don't know how," she stammered, fear evident in her voice.

Laura's expression was determined as she met Natalie's gaze. "I've been studying the flight manual for weeks, and I checked the gas tank, it's full. I used to watch my grandpa fly. He even let me steer a few times. I know that I can do this."
