[1996]

"Coach is nowhere near any condition to walk," Jackie said, her tone sharp. "And Evelyn's still unconscious. Or did you forget?"

A heavy silence fell over the group. Natalie clenched her fists, her knuckles turning white. After a moment, Laura broke the silence, looking at Coach Ben. "What do you think, Coach?"

Coach Ben looked at her, his expression pained and uncertain. "I don't know. I mean, Jackie's right, you'd have to leave me behind, I guess, but whatever."

Taissa stepped forward. "We could make you a stretcher."

Jackie turned to her, laughing sarcastically. "Oh, okay."

"Seriously. If we take turns carrying it..." Taissa insisted.

Jackie shook her head, her frustration boiling over. "No. This is bullshit. I say no. Okay? No way."

"Let's put it to a vote," Taissa suggested, her voice steady. "All in favor of waiting here?"

The group hesitated, glancing at each other nervously. Lottie looked at Evelyn's still form, her mind racing. Evelyn's wound was still fresh, and moving her could easily make things worse. Here, they had some control, some ability to monitor her and react quickly if anything went wrong. The thought of jostling Evelyn around through the wilderness filled her with dread.

Lottie slowly raised her hand, her eyes not leaving Evelyn. Jackie quickly followed suit, her expression determined. Mari hesitated but then raised her hand as well, her face set with concern. Laura Lee, after a moment of contemplation, also raised her hand.

Taissa nodded, acknowledging the votes. "Alright, all in favor of the lake?"

Natalie immediately raised her hand, her jaw set. Van followed, her eyes flicking nervously between the others. Misty, who had been unusually quiet, raised her hand as well, her face serious. Akilah and Travis, after exchanging a glance, both raised their hands.

The majority was clear. Taissa looked around, her expression firm. "Then it's settled. Grab your shit."

Jackie and the others, who had voted to stay, exchanged worried glances but didn't argue further. They understood the risks but knew they had to stick together as a group. Everyone began gathering their belongings, preparing for the journey ahead.
