— SHE WISHED —

[2021]
Evelyn sat in her living room, the soft glow of the afternoon sun filtering through the curtains, casting a warm light on the pages of the book she was reading. She glanced up occasionally to watch Jack, as he played with his toys on the floor. His laughter and the sound of his small cars crashing together filled the room, bringing a smile to her face.
It was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell. Evelyn closed her book, marking her place, and rose from the couch. She made her way to the door, glancing back at Jack, who was now engrossed in building a tower with his blocks, abandoning his cars.
When she opened the door, she was met with the sight of Callie, standing on the other side. Callie's eyes were watery, her cheeks flushed from what could have been the cold or something else entirely. She managed a small smile when Evelyn answered, quickly rubbing her eyes.
"Sorry, just the wind," Callie said, her voice a little shaky as she tried to sound casual.
Evelyn frowned slightly, not believing her excuse for a moment. She could see the redness around Callie's eyes, the way her lower lip trembled just a bit. But she chose not to press her, knowing from experience that sometimes it was best to let someone come to her in her own time.
"Jack missed you," Evelyn said softly, stepping aside to let Callie in.
Callie hesitated for a moment before stepping inside, her shoulders relaxing slightly as she entered, feeling the familiar warmth she always gets when she's at their home. She shrugged off her jacket, hanging it on the coat rack by the door.
As Callie walked into the living room, Jack's face lit up. "Callie!" he exclaimed, abandoning his tower and running over to her, his arms outstretched.
Callie knelt down and embraced him, the hint of a genuine smile tugging at her lips. "Hey, buddy," she said, her voice softer now. She ruffled his hair and looked up at Evelyn, her eyes still glistening but with a hint of gratitude.
Evelyn closed the door, her frown deepening. She watched Callie carefully, noting the sadness in her eyes despite her attempts to hide it. Evelyn decided not to press her immediately, instead choosing to offer a comforting presence. She returned to her chair, keeping an eye on Jack and Callie as they played together.
After a while, Evelyn couldn't hold back her concern any longer. "Is everything alright?"
Callie looked up, her expression wavering. She glanced at Jack, who was engrossed in his game, and then back at Evelyn. "It's... just been a tough day," she admitted quietly.
