[1996]
The forest seemed endless as the group trudged through the underbrush, their footsteps muffled by the thick layer of fallen leaves. They had been walking for miles, the sun now hanging low in the sky, casting long shadows among the trees. The air was heavy with the scent of pine and earth, but as they pressed on, another odor began to permeate the air—something metallic and faintly putrid.
Finally, they stumbled upon a river. The water was an unnatural reddish hue, the smell intensifying as they approached. Evelyn and Van, curiosity piqued, stepped closer to the edge. Evelyn's face twisted in disgust as she leaned over to get a better look, while Van knelt down, cupping the water in her hands.
"Definitely shouldn't drink it," Misty said, her voice cutting through the heavy silence.
"No shit. It smells weird," Mari replied, her nose wrinkling in distaste.
Akilah, who had been staring at the river with a frown, spoke up, "What did Lottie say was in her dream? A river of blood?"
"And a cloud of red smoke," Mari added, glancing nervously at the water.
Taissa rolled her eyes, her tone laced with sarcasm. "Yeah. And last night, I dreamed I went water-skiing with Princess Diana, so..."
Evelyn, still peering at the river with a mix of curiosity and revulsion, turned to Taissa, her expression puzzled. "What dream are you talking about?"
Mari jumped in, her eyebrows raised in surprise. "She didn't tell you? I thought you guys were like a thing."
Evelyn's confusion deepened. "What gives you that idea?"
Mari replied matter-of-factly, "Uh... the kiss on the cheek before we left."
Evelyn flushed as she remembered Lottie's gesture, stumbling over her words. "N-no, we're just— just friends, yeah."
Mari smirked. "Doesn't look like it."
Akilah nudged Mari to stop talking.
Misty quickly interjected, trying to shift the focus. "I think that mineral deposits can change the water's color. Like iron, maybe?"
Taissa seized the opportunity to steer them back on track. "I'm sure that's what it is, then. Come on, this has been a fun detour, but we should keep moving."
