"I can't keep pretending. I love you, more than I've ever loved anyone. And it terrifies me, but it's the truth. I need you to know."

[1996]
Mari leaned back against a log, her eyes wide with surprise. "I can't believe Evelyn's awake," she said, shaking her head in disbelief. "I really thought she was done for."
Shauna shot her a glare, her eyes narrowing. "Mari, could you just shut. the. fuck. up. She's been through a lot," she snapped, irritation evident in her voice.
Mari shrugged, unbothered by Shauna's tone. "Yeah, but she's so... quiet now. Not like herself at all. It's kind of weird, don't you think?"
Van, who had been listening quietly, frowned. "You don't even know her that well, Mari," she pointed out. "You can't say what she's like."
Mari raised an eyebrow, her lips pursed. "But still... it's just strange. She was always so chatty and sociable. Now she seems... I don't know, different."
The group fell into an uneasy silence, their gazes drifting towards Evelyn. She was sitting outside the cabin, her back resting against the rough wood, staring out at the surrounding forest. Her posture was tense, her eyes distant and unfocused, lost in thoughts that seemed miles away from the present moment.
Evelyn's usual vibrant presence had been replaced by a quiet, almost ghostly demeanor. She barely moved, her gaze fixed on something unseen in the distance. Her hands, once animated and expressive, now lay limp in her lap. She seemed oblivious to the chatter and activity around her, wrapped in a cocoon of silence and introspection.
Laura, who had been sitting quietly beside them, finally spoke up. Her voice was calm and steady, a contrast to the rising tension in the group. "Well... I'm just glad that the Lord still hears us," she said softly, her eyes gazing up at the sky. "Evelyn's awake, and that's a blessing. We should be thankful for that."
Van nodded at what Laura said, then turned to see Travis holding the gun up, aiming at a squirrel. Her eyes widened in alarm. "Travis, what the hell are you doing?" she exclaimed, rushing over to him and trying to take the gun out of his hands. "You don't know what the hell you're doing with that."
Jackie, sitting in a chair with her arms crossed, watched the scene unfold with a scowl. "He's being fucking stupid," she muttered.
Travis, not letting go of the gun, glared at Van. "No, what's stupid is the fact that we have a gun and we're not fucking using it," he retorted, his voice filled with frustration. He pulled the trigger, but the shot missed the squirrel by a wide margin.
