[1996]

Shauna sat by the window, her gaze unfocused as she stared out at the bleak landscape beyond the glass. The soft sound of footsteps approached, and Shauna didn't have to look up to know it was Lottie. She could feel her presence, that quiet yet intense energy that seemed to radiate from her. Lottie came to stand beside her, the warmth of her body a stark contrast to the icy chill of the windowpane.

"It's what she would have wanted," Lottie said, her voice gentle, yet certain.

Shauna's brows furrowed slightly at the comment, and she spared Lottie a glance, her expression a mix of confusion and disbelief. But she didn't respond, turning her attention back to the window instead. The implication of Lottie's words hung heavy in the air, a weight that Shauna wasn't sure she could bear.

Lottie, continued, her tone soft but insistent. "Maybe not for the rest of us, but for you. For the baby. I think some part of you knew that."

The words settled into Shauna's mind like stones dropped into a still pond, sending ripples through her thoughts. She remained silent, her eyes fixed on the distant trees, the snow-covered ground. After what felt like an eternity, she finally spoke, her voice thick with emotion. "But I wanted it, too. I don't know, I just feel so fucked-up."

Lottie moved to sit beside Shauna on the bench, their shoulders almost touching. Her presence was steady, grounding in a way that Shauna didn't realize she needed until that moment. "You can't blame yourself," Lottie said softly. "We all did it together."

Shauna shook her head, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "I'm scared, Lottie. I mean, everything feels out of control, like... like I don't know what's gonna happen next." She paused, her voice dropping to a whisper, fear lacing her words. "What if I'm...?"

Lottie cut her off gently, her voice firm. "Shauna, no. You won't hurt the baby." She turned her gaze away for a moment, looking across the room to where Evelyn was still sitting by the fireplace, her knees drawn up to her chest as she tried to sleep. Evelyn's presence seemed to offer a small comfort, a reminder that they weren't alone in this nightmare.

Lottie allowed herself a brief smile, "You're gonna be a great mom." she said with quiet conviction before turning back to Shauna. "And you have all of us to help. It's gonna be a beautiful thing. We should do something to welcome him."
