— I THINK NOT —

[1996]
The cabin was dimly lit by the glow of the fireplace, casting warm, flickering shadows on the wooden walls. The night outside was cold and dark, but inside, the atmosphere was alive with laughter and music. Mari, with a playful grin, played the cassette player and placed it inside a metal basin, amplifying the sound. As the familiar beats of Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It" began to play, the energy in the room shifted, becoming vibrant and infectious.
The girls immediately started moving to the rhythm, their bodies swaying and bouncing in time with the music. Van and Taissa took the center of the room, their dance moves synchronized and lively, while Jackie and Shauna danced nearby, their faces lit up with smiles and laughter.
Evelyn sat beside Akilah on the wooden floor, her face glowing with happiness as she watched her friends dance. She clapped her hands in time with the beat, cheering them on.
Akilah laughed, nudging Evelyn gently. "Come on, you should join them. You're the best dancer here."
Evelyn shook her head, still smiling. "Not tonight, Akilah. I'm just enjoying the show." She leaned back, her eyes sparkling with delight as she continued to watch her friends.
Taissa, noticing Evelyn's contentment, called out from the center of the room, "Evelyn, you're missing out! This is our jam!"
Evelyn raised her hands in mock surrender, laughing. "I'm cheering you on from here, Tai! You all look amazing."
As the song played on, the girls' movements grew bolder and more enthusiastic. They sang along to the chorus, their voices blending with the music in a harmonious cacophony. The warmth of the fire and the camaraderie filled the cabin, creating a haven of light and laughter amidst the darkness outside.
Suddenly, the sound started to slow down, the music warping until it completely stopped. The abrupt silence was jarring.
Van sighed, frowning as she picked up the cassette. "Goddamn it."
Mari looked over. "What happened?"
Van shrugged, examining the tape. "I don't know." She tried hitting the cassette player with her palm, frustration evident in her movements.
Evelyn crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. "Has hitting something ever fixed it?"
Van scowled, then smirked, rolling her eyes. "Hey, it works in movies," she retorted, giving the cassette player one last, futile tap.
